Integrated Rural Development and Nature Conservation (IRDNC) is a pioneer in community-based conservation in Namibia, playing a vital role in the development of thriving communal conservancies that ensure local people manage and benefit directly from their natural resources. IRDNC's community conservation model stands as a beacon of success, inspiring similar efforts across Africa and beyond. As Namibia’s conservation landscape evolves, so must IRDNC, to ensure the organization is equipped to face new challenges, address emerging issues, and maximize opportunities. This makes a new strategy essential - one that will empower IRDNC to continue supporting communities and their communal conservancies years into the future. Maliasili has enjoyed a long-standing partnership with IRDNC, supporting them over the years in strengthening their organizational capacity and ensuring they have the tools, resources, and strategies needed to scale their impact. We’re excited to embark on this journey again with the IRDNC team, supporting them in developing this robust strategy that will continue to drive conservation and innovation in Namibia, creating lasting change for both people and wildlife. IRDNC's strength lies in its deep connection with the communities it serves, and this new strategy will further reinforce that bond. #communityconservation #Namibia

ReGeCom reinforces its commitment to People and Nature ReGeCom’s core mission is to build effective and representative community entities and place them at the heart of conservation efforts. This commitment was clearly articulated during the launch of our 2024-2028 Strategic Plan on August 15th, 2024. The launch event, held in person at the Montebelo Indy Hotel in Maputo, brought together representatives from the government, NGOs, civil society organizations, community members from around Maputo National Park, and ReGeCom members. The atmosphere was truly engaging, reflecting the shared dedication to our cause. Our strategic plan is designed to be a dynamic tool that guides our efforts in scaling up our community governance approach. It aims to provide valuable insights that support #Community-Based Natural Resource Management (#CBNRM) policies in Mozambique while strengthening the capacity of our members for collective impact. ReGeCom is eager to continue collaborating with various stakeholders, especially the Government of #Mozambique, to accelerate the implementation of community governance approaches around protected and conservation areas. Our goal is to place #communities at the center of #biodiversity #conservation and rural development initiatives while enhancing the benefits generated by the #sustainable management of #naturalresources. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all who contributed to this milestone, particularly Maliasili who facilitated the plan’s development with financial support from the African Nature Based Tourism Platform. We look forward to increased engagement from other donors and partners in implementing the plan, ensuring that both people and nature can thrive in Mozambique. Our Strategic Planning Workbook ⬇️ There’s no set formula for #strategic planning. However, a great strategy includes some foundational elements. This #workbook is designed to help you get started in thinking through some of these core elements. While it’s best to have someone help you facilitate your strategic planning process, this can give you a head start and help you practice your ‘strategic thinking’ about your organization’s work. #communityconservation #strategicplanning

Doing the work is just one piece of the puzzle; it’s equally essential to understand how to measure success, learn from setbacks, and adapt. After launching its Strategic Plan earlier this year, our Tanzanian partner, the Community Wildlife Management Area Consortium (CWMAC), identified the need for a robust #Monitoring, #Evaluation, and Learning (MEL) system to effectively track and assess the results of their work and interventions throughout the plan's lifespan. We recently ran a workshop for the entire CWMAC team, emphasizing the importance of a robust MEL system for the organization as its mandate and scope continue to grow. By the end of the workshop, the team appreciated the opportunity to learn how their combined efforts in project implementation and operations contribute to achieving their goals and mission. A well-developed MEL system not only tracks progress but also ensures that every team member understands their role in the organization's success. It's about creating a culture of continuous learning and improvement, ultimately driving greater impact in #conservation.

We are human through the humanity of others. #Ubuntu is a guiding African philosophy emphasizing interconnectedness, compassion, humanity, dignity, and communal well-being. In a popular Reader article from last year, Jacqueline Asiimwe - a Ugandan human rights lawyer, philanthropy advisor, and CEO at CivSource Africa - discusses with our Portfolio Funding Director, Resson Kantai Duff, how embracing Ubuntu can positively influence our relationship with each other, nature and our #conservation practices. Five insights from Ubuntu ⬇️   ✅ Ubuntu is about the interconnectedness of all beings. It is about being, belonging, and becoming. "Being" encompasses more than just an individual identity; it represents the culmination of all those who came before us. "Belonging" emphasizes our community, and "becoming" focuses on our responsibility to future generations, the importance of caring for our environment, and preserving what we've inherited. 👥 ✅ Living in community isn’t just about people; it is also about wildlife and nature. Ubuntu is not just about community for humans; it extends to our environment, including all the living things around us. The African way of living in community, sharing resources, and helping one another extends even to the wildlife and ecosystems on the continent. It's about recognizing that our actions impact the environment and all living beings around us. 🐾 ✅ As leaders, to lead with dignity and humility is our responsibility. Ubuntu calls for authentic #leadership that recognizes the humanity in others. Leaders should "see" their teams, valuing their whole selves and fostering a supportive work environment. This approach nurtures dignity and respect. 🤝 ✅ In philanthropy, Ubuntu should inspire us to shift focus from money to people. Philanthropy should enable organizations and communities to thrive on their terms. Ubuntu prioritizes people over money, advocating for trust, understanding, and support - rather than a 'top-down' approach. This involves meeting communities and organisations where they are, and respecting their autonomy. 💡 ✅ We must re-examine our existing power structures and systems. Ubuntu contrasts with hierarchical power, emphasizing collective power and community. It encourages reclaiming and incorporating Africa's unique perspective on power into leadership, conservation, and philanthropy. 🌟 How to practice Ubuntu daily: ☑️ Be humble: Acknowledge you’re not self-made; practice humility by recognizing the contributions of those who came before you. 🙏 ☑️ Be grateful: Recognize and appreciate the support you receive from your community, teams, and partners. 🙏 ☑️ Be a steward: Today's leaders must be stewards for the future, thinking beyond the present and ensuring that their actions contribute to the well-being of future generations. 🌱 Learn more: https://lnkd.in/dqgRymbq

Pleased to share this new paper in Scientific Reports, led by Christian Kiffner, on the emerging long-term impacts of community-based conservation in northern Tanzania's Tarangire ecosystem- one of East Africa's most important landscapes for wildlife, tourism, and human-wildlife co-existence. The paper integrates data from multiple previous studies focused on individual sites or management areas, to draw larger-scale implications of conservation efforts and strategies over the past 20 years. Key conclusions which have much wider implications beyond this landscape: "In the last three decades, the main strategy for ecosystem restoration in the Tarangire Ecosystem has been to focus conservation efforts on protecting functional connectivity by creating diverse [community-based conservation models] to connect dry and wet season ranges of migratory wildlife. Overall, site-based monitoring suggests that this pragmatic conservation approach was effective. Considering that the majority of wildebeest and zebra spend approximately half of the year outside protected areas, crossing several main roads and traversing areas of human settlement during their seasonal migration, this is a remarkable example for human-wildlife coexistence in a human-dominated landscape, with important implications for conservation policy in East African savanna rangelands and potentially beyond...ecological restoration goals are likely best achieved if conservation measures are designed as social-ecological endeavors, support Indigenous land and resource tenure and management systems that foster coexistence of livestock and wildlife, ensure that people benefit from increasing wildlife populations, and provide cost-effective ways to minimize costs associated with increasing wildlife populations such as crop damages, livestock depredation, threats to human wellbeing and opportunity, and transaction costs associated with preventing wildlife-related damages." https://lnkd.in/dw6y5yJH
