About us
Manomet is a science-driven conservation organization with deep roots in bird banding. We have teams across the Western Hemisphere focused on improving the health of flyways and ecosystems challenged by climate change and human activities. Our goal is to reverse the decline of shorebirds, promote coastal resilience, and educate and empower the next generation of conservationists. For over 50 years, Manomet has formed vital partnerships with businesses, producers, and educators, to help nature and local communities thrive. We use individual birds or species to better explain the threats to shorebirds and show you the wider impact of our work. But our work doesn’t stop there. We have always believed that education is a big part of creating long-term change. This is why we strive to inspire, mentor and guide educators and students, especially within underrepresented communities, to create the next generation of conservationists. From the north slope of Alaska to the southern tip of Argentina, our staff and scientists look for high-impact opportunities to make our world a more resilient place. We want to say THANK YOU to everyone who participated in, or donated to, this year’s Bird-a-Thon! Whether you birded with us on the bluff, or shared an eBird checklist from elsewhere, you were a vital part of our team! At our Big Sit at HQ, we saw 50 species in 5 hours. In total, we received 102 checklists from 3 countries and saw 248 Species from 39 eBird users! Well done, everyone!👏 It’s not too late to submit your checklist from Oct. 12th or 13th (just share with user “Manomet BAT”), or donate! Your contributions support our bird banding lab, and contribute to community science! This was our 46th year of Bird-a-thon, and the biggest turnout we’ve had at HQ in quite a while! We estimated about 50 people stopped by to help us identify birds, do arts and crafts, listen to a story, and chat with fellow bird-appreciators. Some highlights include: A Red-headed Woodpecker at our headquarters property, which was the first seen here since 2008! We also had 11 new species for our BAT-all-time List, including: King Rail, Suiriri Flycatcher and Eurasian Crag Martin! Other highlights include hot cider, coffee, and pancakes :)

Welcome To Manomet’s 46th Annual Bird-A-Thon! Bird-a-Thon is a 24-hour birding extravaganza that contributes to bird research and conservation! This is how it works: On Saturday, October 12, 2024, you can choose from a couple of options: 1) Come to Manomet’s headquarters and bird with us at our all-ages, family-friendly, FREE event or 2) You can bird on your own, wherever you usually bird, or choose someplace new! While you bird, the goal is to count as many bird species as you can find by sight or sound and add your findings to Manomet’s eBird list. Learn more and register here👇 https://lnkd.in/dP4cKa-8 💡By participating, you are being a part of community science and contributing to long-term data and critical research—and helping us reach our Bird-a-Thon goal of 660 species counted in total!🏆

Making Waves for a Cleaner Coast! This past Sunday, 30 dedicated volunteers joined us at White Horse Beach for #InternationalBeachCleanupDay, where we collected 23 bags of trash weighing approximately 100 pounds! It was a great day of teamwork, contributing to the health of our coastlines and ensuring a safer environment for both people and wildlife. White Horse Beach, located just a stone’s throw from Manomet’s headquarters, was the perfect spot to bring our community together. We cleaned up and had the opportunity to chat with neighbors about the changes they’ve seen on the coast over the years. The global impact of this event is inspiring! In 2023, almost half a million volunteers cleaned over 16,000 miles of coastline and removed nearly 8 million pounds of trash worldwide. Here in Massachusetts, COASTSWEEP saw over 3,000 volunteers remove nearly 12 tons of trash. Locally, last year at White Horse Beach, we collected over 170 pounds of trash with 45 volunteers. This year, we kept up the momentum with 30 volunteers collecting 100 pounds of debris—without a single lobster trap in the mix for the first time! These numbers remind us that every effort counts, no matter how small. By coming together as a community, we’re making a tangible difference to our coastlines, protecting precious wildlife, and supporting a global movement toward cleaner oceans. A huge thank you to all the incredible volunteers who gave their time and energy to help us protect the coast we share! Photos: Jeanne O'Rourke / Manomet

In August, we had the pleasure of hosting two ornithology workshops at Manomet’s headquarters in Massachusetts: The Ornithological Career Institute and The Passerine Banding Fellowship. Manomet scientists Salvadora Morales and Evan Dalton, along with other Manomet staff, helped instruct six early-career professionals from six different countries in Latin America! Thank you, Pablo Gigy Gregoret (Argentina), for sharing your experience. Thank you, everyone, for making this possible! We look forward to hosting more workshops like these in 2025!
