This International Day of Action for Rivers (and every day!), the TerraCycle Foundation is committed to protecting rivers and preventing ocean pollution at the same time. By partnering with local communities to build, adapt, and maintain river trash capture technology, they pull over 17,000 pounds of waste from rivers and waterways each week—before it can flow into our oceans. That’s right: ALL of that came out of rivers. Plus, through their Green School Program, they educate, prepare, and invest in the next generation of river protectors! Students learn about how plastic enters the world’s waterways, how the Foundation collects and sorts it for recycling, and how to join them in ensuring that waste is disposed of properly—all with hands-on experiences and mentorship from Foundation experts. When playtime is over, and TerraCyclers are left with well-loved toys that can’t be donated—that’s where we come in. We offer paid and free recycling solutions for toys to keep them out of landfills and incinerators. When a shipment of toys arrives at one of our MRFs, we scan it to record the shipment information, date, weight, and material it contains before sorting the toys based on their characteristics and composition. Then, the materials are recycled into new products like outdoor furniture and decking, plastic shipping pallets, watering cans, and more! Pet food packaging typically isn’t accepted by local recycling services because it's hard to recycle. It’s often made of layers of different materials (like plastic and aluminum), and it’s very lightweight, so special equipment and processes are needed to recycle it.
