About us
Many Hands leverages the power of collective giving to support nonprofits serving and empowering Washington, DC area women, children, and families in socioeconomic need. As the leading giving circle in the DC metro area, we have granted more than $2.5 million to local nonprofits since 2004. Originally a women’s organization inspired by the Impact100 model, we continue to prioritize the empowerment of donors that philanthropy has historically overlooked. We welcome all members who share this goal. As an all-volunteer organization, Many Hands empowers all members to help shape grantmaking decisions. However, we have no volunteer requirement. Members are always welcome to participate in the ways that serve their interests and goals. On average, 40% of members serve on a review committee or volunteer in an operational role. If you *are* interested in participating in grantmaking, no experience or expertise is required. Fellow members will provide training and support you every step of the way. To learn more, visit us at manyhandsdc.org or email us at membership@manyhandsdc.org.

Good news from 2024 Impact Grantee SafeSpot Children's Advocacy Center of Fairfax! SafeSpot's board recently approved the addition of a full-time therapist. CEO Heather O'Malley shares: "The support of Many Hands was a major contributing factor to our Board’s confidence that we can build and sustain capacity in our most impactful program. Growing our therapy program to serve more children is a significant part of my vision for SafeSpot and I truly believe that it would not have happened this soon without Many Hands' support. We will be able to serve an additional 30 children each year with trauma-focused therapy to help them heal and build brighter futures full of hope and promise." To learn more about SafeSpot, join a Hope and Healing Tour, offered 6:00pm - 7:00 pm on the second Thursday of every month. The tours are opportunities for community members to visit the center and learn about core programs. Upcoming tours will be held on November 14, and December 12. Congratulations to the Many Hands grantees who were among the 40 DC-serving nonprofits awarded a total of $10 million in multiyear funding by the Greater Washington Community Foundation's Health Equity Fund this month. We are particularly proud that My Sister's Place, DC received $400,000 in renewed funding to support the RISE Trust, the country's first unconditional cash assistance program for survivors of domestic violence. The RISE Trust was created through a partnership between My Sister's Place, DC and Capital Area Asset Builders that took shape after both organizations received Many Hands grants in 2022. Congratulations to former Many Hands Board member and award-winning journalist Jill Rosenbaum Meyer on the release of her new documentary, “Silence in Sikeston"! The joint production from Retro Report and KFF Health News tells the story of the 1942 lynching of Cleo Wright and the ensuing failure of the first federal attempt to prosecute a lynching. The lynching continues to haunt the rural Missouri community as it struggles to cope with the fatal 2020 police shooting of a young Black father, Denzel Taylor. The film is available for streaming on YouTube and the PBS streaming app. #silenceinsikeston #raceinamerica
Denzel Taylor was 23 when he was killed by police gunfire. Sikeston, Mo., the city where he died, was the site of a lynching nearly 80 years earlier. Watch #SilenceInSikeston, made with World Channel and KFF Health News, to learn more: https://lnkd.in/e8ufAQnw
