MARINE FORCES COMMAND WELCOMES NEW COMMANDER A change of command was held today to transfer command authorities of Fleet Marine Force Atlantic, Marine Forces Command, Marine Forces Northern Command from Lt. Gen. Brian Cavanaugh to Lt. Gen. Roberta L. Shea during a ceremony at Naval Station Norfolk aboard the USS Iwo Jima (LHD 7). Today’s ceremony was presided over by General Eric M. Smith, 39th Commandant of the United States Marine Corps. “It is a Navy-Marine Corps team,” said Smith. “This ship exists to support amphibious warfare and the Marines exist to support their fleet. That’s how it worked at Guadalcanal and that’s how it works today. One team, one fight.” The significance of today’s event was captured by the attendance of Secretary of the US Navy Carlos Del Toro. "Lieutenant General Cavanaugh, I am confident that the legacy you leave behind—through the success of this command and those you have mentored and led along the way—will continue to serve our Marine Corps and country well into the future,” said Del Toro. Cavanaugh is a native of Baltimore, Maryland and a graduate of the United States Naval Academy. He was commissioned in 1990 and designated a naval aviator in 1992. Cavanaugh relinquished command of FMFLANT, MARFORCOM, and MARFORNORTH after leading the triple-headed command with multiple priorities, focusing on returning to our naval roots. “Today, strategic guidance and the threat environment necessitate that the Marine Corps re-orient to our roots as a naval expeditionary force in readiness,” said Cavanaugh. “FMFLANT and MARFORCOM are at the forefront of this vital maritime realignment.” Shea is a native of Madbury, New Hampshire and a graduate of the United States Naval Academy. She was commissioned in 1991 and was designated a communications officer. “This is indeed a very special set of commands,” stated Shea “The sheer magnitude and breadth of their mission enables it to make a difference every day for Marines and sailors who are operating at the forward edge. Confronting those who seek to change our international rules-based order, to do us harm, or to challenge us at our embassy’s doors.” “Lieutenant General Shea, I know you are ready, because I have seen you in action, leading the Marine Corps Office of Legislative Affairs,” expressed Del Toro. "It was an honor to work with you in the Pentagon, and I thank you for your dedication and service in support of our Navy-Marine Corps Team. I look forward to hearing about Marine Forces Command’s many successes during your tenure—and I know there will be many." #bluegreenteam #navalservices #usmc
