This amazing monk seal is more than just a pretty face, it represents hope for the future of the species. On Saturday, we celebrated ten years of patient care and conservation impact at The Marine Mammal Center’s hospital, Ke Kai Ola, home to our Hawai’i conservation program. When Ke Kai Ola first opened, the Hawaiian monk seal population was less than 1,100 individuals and declining by 6% a year. Now, we can share that the growth of the population has increased 2% a year from 2013 to 2022. The estimated population is now more than 1,600! And nearly 30 percent of those animals are alive today due to conservation efforts of NOAA Fisheries and its partners like us. While we’re encouraged by this positive change, 1,600 is still an alarmingly small number. Our Kaiāulu Fest today honors the 10th anniversary of Ke Kai Ola, our Hawai‘i Island conservation program and hospital. It also kicks off The Marine Mammal Center’s 50th anniversary seal-ebrations 🎉🦭 When we first opened Ke Kai Ola, the Hawaiian monk seal was headed for extinction with a declining population of less than 1,100 individuals 💔 In the last decade, that estimate reversed course to a steadily increasing 1,600 individuals - a number not seen in more than 20 years 🌈 We hope you share our pride in this successful turnaround and our passion to continue this urgent work needed to protect this endangered species. Say aloha to our newest patients 👋🌈 These three endangered Hawaiian monk seal pups (DT12, DT48, and DT46 - names to come!) were so small it was unlikely they'd survive the coming months without intervention. Luckily, they're now in care at our hospital on Hawai‘i Island, Ke Kai Ola, the only care facility in the world dedicated to caring for this species.
