LOE3: Historic Preservation LtCol Terrence “Terry” Moore is a legendary Force Reconnaissance Marine who received a battlefield commission in Vietnam, served in MACV SOG, with the Central Intelligence Agency and was inducted into the USSOCOM Commando Hall of Honor in 2015. Terry passed away on 9 June 2018. LOE3: Historic Preservation Recon Company 5th Marines: Part 2 As the Somalia deployment wore on for the 5th Marines Recon company in early 1993 across the Somali desert, and Team Sky-shark in the sweltering heat on the Embassy roof, a few USMC combat artists and others would come to spend time with the team on the roof. They did not mind risking the threat of enemy sniper fire and potshots with the team who observed and reported throughout the city from the vantage of the roof. The Combat artists would always stay calm while busily sketching away. Most notably, Combat Artist, and WWII Veteran Aviator Colonel Peter Mike Gish, who also served as a combat artist in Vietnam in 1967, and reserve Capt. Burton E. Moore, Jr. were both on the rooftop regularly. They both were subsequently befriended by the team. Colonel Gish and Capt. Moore did many sketches of team Sky-shark during a few intense firefights where LCpl Ramsey and LCpl Bales switched off shooting and spotting behind the M40A1 Sniper Rifle, while LCpl Wasson laid down suppressive fire. LCpl’s Ramsey and Wasson learned the sniper craft daily in real life situations behind the gun with the team Scout Sniper Bales over the course of the deployment. MCSSHF President Tim Parkhurst, Director Kevin Root, Advisor John “Ranger” Dailey and Marine Reconnaissance Foundation Board member discuss its mission, projects & programs, to include the planned design and build of a Scout Sniper Memorial, to be placed at the Marine Corps Museum in Quantico Virginia, as well as the research and preservation of the rich history of the Scout Sniper community from WWI through the GWOT. The excellence of formal Marine Corps Scout Sniper training and the legendary Snipers throughout Marine Corps history set the standard for United States military snipers. This legacy of excellence in training and on the battlefield cross cuts Marine Corps Infantry, Reconnaissance and adjacent organizations across the DOD to set the base POI for current day Sniper curriculums from the Recon Sniper Course (RSC), MARSOF Advanced Sniper Course (MASC), the SEAL sniper course and the initial training pipeline for many National Mission Force/Special Mission Units and the FBI Hostage Rescue Team amongst others.
