About us
The Laboratories Administration is a part of the Maryland Department of Health and provides analytical, scientific, epidemiological, and regulatory services and information to meet the needs of state, county, and city health departments, the Maryland Department of the Environment, and various federal agencies when monitoring and ensuring the health of Maryland's citizens. Our mission is to protect your community and promote public health by: • monitoring the environment, • screening all newborns for 55 hereditary disorders, • protecting the food supply and consumer products, and • providing surveillance and public health testing to detect infectious disease agents and preventing disease transmission. The public health laboratory system is prepared to confront serious community threats, such as emerging and reemerging infectious diseases, growing antimicrobial drug resistance, contaminated and overburdened water supplies, and foodborne pathogens associated with new and imported food products. The state laboratories are also improving disease prevention and control by implementing new molecular and genetic technologies to identify and track infectious microorganisms responsible for disease outbreaks, by detecting hazardous chemicals and their metabolites, by monitoring gene mutations associated with identifiable and treatable genetic defects, and by implementing new scientific instruments and procedures to better detect and control the possible effects of biological and chemical terrorism.

The MDH Labs Administration is excited to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Laboratory Response Network (LRN) which includes the Laboratory Response Network for Biological Threats (LRN-B) and the Laboratory Response Network for Chemical Threats (LRN-C). The LRN network of laboratories across all 50 states strengthens national security by rapidly detecting biological and chemical threats, ensuring a swift and effective public health response. As an LRN member, MDH Laboratories Administration is required to maintain infrastructure and capabilities to rapidly and accurately detect chemical and biological terrorism agents, as well as emerging infectious diseases. With ongoing support from the LRN, MDH and other laboratories around the country we continue to evolve and adapt to new and changing threats more rapidly. A more prepared and resilient network, LRN helps to keep the nation safe. To learn about the LRN and its important role, please visit their website: https://lnkd.in/eq_Ki5vq. #publichealth

Every summer the MDH Laboratories Administration partners with participating counties to determine the population dynamics and species distribution of mosquitoes in a given area. This is a critical factor in determining how to control mosquitoes and whether there is a disease risk in your community. So far for the 2024 season, we are at a 13% positivity rate for WNV (West Nile Virus) which is up from 5.4% positivity for WNV in the 2023 season. Other viruses include EEE (Eastern Equine Encephalitis) which was at .22% positivity in 2023, and none detected for 2024. SLE (St. Louis Encephalitis) is rare and there are no cases detected for 2023 or 2024. #Arbovirus #publichealth
