For a more livable city from sidewalk to skyline.
About us
The Municipal Art Society of New York (MAS) lifts up the voices of the people in the debates that shape New York’s built environment and leads the way toward a more livable city from sidewalk to skyline. MAS envisions a future in which all New Yorkers share in the richness of city life—where growth is balanced, character endures, and a resilient future is secured. Since 1893, our advocacy efforts have led to the creation of the New York City Planning Commission, Public Design Commission, Landmarks Preservation Commission, and the Tribute in Light; the preservation of Grand Central Terminal, the lights of Times Square, and the Garment District; the conservation of more than 50 works of public art; and the founding of such civic organizations as the Public Art Fund, the New York Landmarks Conservancy, P.S. 1, the Historic Districts Council, the Park Avenue Armory Conservancy, and the Waterfront Alliance.

Join us as we present the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Medal, the Municipal Art Society’s highest honor, to Yoko Ono, Patti Smith, and Sandra Bloodworth. The Medal is awarded annually to individuals who, through vision, leadership, and philanthropy, have made a lasting contribution to New York City. The Municipal Art Society of New York reposted this
Last night at Housing Works on Crosby, The Municipal Art Society of New York held a book talk with Sandra Bloodworth and Cheryl Hageman of MTA Arts & Design moderated by MAS president Elizabeth Goldstein. “Contemporary Art Underground,” is an incredible catalog of public art installed in New York subway and rail stations since 2015. There will always be valid complaints about the MTA, but this art program is definitely a bright spot. Of course I picked up a copy, and of course I got it signed!

This week, MAS supporters and staff received a behind-the-scenes tour of the East Side Coastal Resiliency (ESCR) project, led by NYC Department of Design and Construction (DDC) Commissioner Thomas Foley and Associate Commissioner Joe Lione. Located along the East River Park in Manhattan, ESCR is one of the largest storm resiliency projects in the nation and is projected to protect 110,000 New Yorkers from the impact of climate change by reducing flood risk to communities along the Lower East Side. The project, which has an estimated completion of 2026, will not only update critical infrastructure for our city, but also deliver resilient public open spaces. It was fascinating to witness the complex engineering and ingenuity required to achieve this level of waterfront protection. Thank you to Commissioner Foley, Associate Commissioner Lione, and the rest of the DDC/PMC team that led us through the site. MAS supports #CityOfYes for Housing Opportunity (COYHO) to create much-needed housing through incremental citywide zoning changes. These are the most significant zoning changes in over 50 years, diversifying the city’s housing stock and opening doors for transit-oriented development, housing in town centers, and innovative shared living spaces. MAS recognizes that as profoundly unaffordable as New York has become, zoning reforms alone will not solve our housing crisis nor will COYHO guarantee housing affordability. We must complement COYHO with comprehensive planning, incentives, state and city funding, and programs that can put the city in the best position to grow and meet the needs of New Yorkers, particularly those most heavily burdened by escalating rents and other housing costs. MAS staff Rawnak Z. and Stephen Albonesi, AICP, WEDG facilitated a "hackathon" with a team of NYU Tandon graduate students as part of the Fall 2024 Public Data Challenge hosted by the NYU Center for Urban Science + Progress (CUSP). MAS's objective was to develop a first-ever comprehensive dataset of all open space in New York City, including parks, playgrounds, plazas, and community gardens overseen by multiple City, State, and federal agencies. MAS staff provided guidance and mentoring during the event, and in the coming days students will be sharing how their work will allow researchers and advocates to more fully understand open space quality and accessibility across New York City neighborhoods. Thank you to MAS Board Member Manny Patole for connecting MAS to these brilliant students! #data #newyorkcity #openspace #datascience #advocacy

One of the city’s most iconic public sculptures is the Promethean bronze Rocket Thrower in Flushing Meadows-Corona Park. A vestige of the 1964 World’s Fair, located on its original site, it embodies the Fair’s theme, “Man’s Entry into Space.” The sculptor, Donald De Lue (1897-1988), was influenced by the tradition of ideal sculpture in ancient Greek and Renaissance masters. Cast in Italy, the monument is supported from within by four bronze tubes held in place by clamps. Standing forty-five-foot high, the semi-nude male hurls a long arc-shaped object through a circle of stars into outer space. Part of the MAS Adopt-A-Monument program, its initial conservation was in 2013 and has been maintained by MAS since. Islands of Heat is the third interactive story in MAS’s Greener Corridors initiative. Launched in early 2024, the initiative calls attention to New York City’s largest arterial roadways as an opportunity for the City to accomplish its biggest policy goals, including equitably mitigating the effects of climate change, improving public safety, and stimulating housing production. "Islands of Heat" explores how these corridors exacerbate the urban heat Island effect and increase the severity of flash flooding during extreme rainfall events. Rather than liabilities, the story argues that New York City’s largest thoroughfares have the potential to be a greater asset in the fight against climate change, but only if a more ambitious approach is taken to increasing trees and other vegetation along them.
