In recognition of National Hispanic Heritage Month, MassDOT is celebrating the rich contributions and cultural heritage of the Massachusetts’s Latino community and remains committed to diversity in transportation. Today, to close out Hispanic Heritage Month we celebrate Carlos Velasquez, who is the Assistant Project Manager in the Rail and Transit Division. Personally, this month is a reminder of my own heritage—a blend of European, Indigenous, Sub-Saharan African, and Asian roots. I take pride in the journeys my ancestors made, crossing oceans and walking long paths to bring us to where we are today. This history fills me with honor, humility, and a deep commitment to respecting others. Latinos represent the beauty of multiculturalism, but I dream of a future where we define ourselves as part of the human race, rather than by our accents, skin colors, or beliefs. There is still much work to be done, but the activities during this celebration encourage us to focus on what unites us, rather than what divides us. We are travelers and builders, continuing the journey our ancestors began thousands of years ago. One day, we will be part of decision-making tables, shaping the future together.

In recognition of National Hispanic Heritage Month, MassDOT is celebrating the rich contributions and cultural heritage of the Massachusetts’s Latino community and remains committed to diversity in transportation. This week we are highlighting Leony Simo, who is Mass RMV Driver Education Program Coordinator and the Co-Chair MassDOT/MBTA Multicultural ERG. Leony shares what Hispanic Heritage means to her. I celebrate my heritage every day. During the month of September, others in the United States have the opportunity to join me in this celebration including my colleagues at MassDOT/MBTA. They can learn about the great things that makes us so proud to be of Hispanic heritage, our rich food, music, art and holiday traditions. But most importantly; our family. I immigrated from Costa Rica over 40 years ago and I cherish the upbringing that has influenced my daily life (family values, unique personality and my community). In my culture we have a deep sense of family pride. Hispanics have influenced sports, science, education and the economy of this country. During this time, we highlight and honor our contributions and achievements to this society. Let’s all unite and support efforts in building a more inclusive and prosperous United States.
