About us
With roots in the rural community of Valle Crucis, North Carolina, the Mast General Store has grown to include eleven locations in four states. The Original Mast Store was opened in 1883 and carried everything from cradles to caskets. The store is the center of the community and is inspiration behind new “old” locations in other cities and towns. Called a destination by travel journalist Charles Kuralt, the Mast Store is known for its wide collection of goods – something for everyone from one to 101. All locations are in rehabilitated buildings along revitalizing main streets in North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, and Tennessee. The merchandise includes traditional fashions, comfortable footwear, outdoor and travel gear, country gourmet foods, toys powered by imagination, and over 500 old-fashioned candies. The goal for employees at the Mast Store is to provide quality goods at fair prices with old-fashioned, friendly service. In addition to physical locations, the Mast Store has an online store where guests can wander virtual aisles filled with the same goods. The Mast Store Annex couldn’t be happier to welcome back familiar faces! ☺️ Closed for more than two weeks following Hurricane Helene, the Annex reopened to the public on Saturday morning. Mast Store President Lisa Cooper offered words of hope and healing before she marked a line above 48 inches high to show where flood waters rose on the store’s front entrance. Mast Store Annex General Manager Joseph Bentley, who helped with the store’s recovery efforts since the first days after the storm, said, “Since last Friday, as the store remnants finished moving through the water, you could see just how strong our mountain community truly is. Neighbors helping neighbors, communities helping communities with cleanup and basic life support efforts. It’s been difficult to witness the catastrophic damage and loss that the hurricane has produced, but each day, we stand stronger together within our community knowing we are here with each other.” The Mast Store Annex will operate with limited hours for the foreseeable future. For more information on its schedule, as well as other Mast Store locations in areas affected by Hurricane Helene, visit Mast Store Online’s Hurricane Helene FAQ page. The Mast Store is incredibly thankful for our guests, our communities, and our mountains. If you’re in the High Country, please drop in to see us and say hello again! ❤️

We are appreciative of the many messages of concern we are receiving from far and near. The devastation in our area is overwhelming, and the photos and videos that are being shown on news channels and other media are only capturing the beginning of the story. Our first step is contacting our staff members to make sure that they and their families are safe. In many areas of the mountains and foothills, cell and internet service are intermittent at best. The Store’s Leadership Team is actively making a plan for what’s next, including active recovery at the Mast Store Annex in Valle Crucis, which took on water during the flood, and a safe return to work for all locations. We are not losing sight of our greater community and will do whatever we can to provide support and help. We know that many of you are wanting to know what you can do to help; please look for organized groups like All Hands and Hearts, the Red Cross, and others that are putting together crews for clean-up and relief. They are in touch with local governments and will direct you to where you can do the most good. We will be sharing a message soon with ways to "help the helpers" in our local communities. Our watchwords for now are 𝗦𝗮𝗳𝗲𝘁𝘆, because that should always come first; 𝗧𝗼𝗴𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿, because together we can achieve more; 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆, because our community gives us strength; and 𝗛𝗼𝗽𝗲, because without hope nothing can be accomplished. We will provide updates on progress as we can and appreciate everyone’s support and efforts on behalf of our communities. In appreciation, Lisa Cooper, President

There are so many questions to wonder about these days. Like, who was the first person brave enough to eat a chicken’s egg? Or why do some people think cilantro tastes like soap and others can’t get enough of it? How did certain colors come to represent the Volunteers, Paladins, Hokies, etc.? Or a burning question that we like to argue about, who thinks the college conference re-alignment is a good idea? And that question can lead to so many other questions.

We can all agree that technology is good. After all, without technological advancements, we would all be carding and spinning yarn to weave cloth for making our own clothes, walking everywhere we go, and books would be very expensive and hard to come by. While we’re not advocates for Luddite living, there are some old-fashioned ways of doing things that should continue to be practiced every day.

This year, one of our supporters asked if we would ever bring back our famous "Women's Build" - an event that empowers the strong women in our service area to come together in service to build our next home. Thanks to our staff's hard work, and a lot of help from our sponsors, we were proud to have over 30 women come to the return of our annual Women's Build event! We always welcome volunteers of all walks of life. This particular event celebrates the women who make our mission possible. Thank you, Watauga County! Sponsors included Mast General Store, Collette Woodruff PC, Kimmy Tiedemann & Connections Realty Group, Creative Printing & Internet Services, LLC, Wildcat Storage Solutions, and our lunch provided by Stick Boy Bread Company. Be sure to join us for our next annual Women's Build, in the summer of 2025!
