Who can forget one of Yogi Bear’s favorite catchphrases, “A pic-a-nic basket has everything a bear needs?” Jellystone Park was definitely a perfect place to enjoy a meal alfresco, but did you know that picnics were affairs originally held indoors? And that there is science behind many of the foods commonly found nestled in a picnic hamper? Yep, there’s a reason we crave watermelon this time of year.
About us
With roots in the rural community of Valle Crucis, North Carolina, the Mast General Store has grown to include eleven locations in four states. The Original Mast Store was opened in 1883 and carried everything from cradles to caskets. The store is the center of the community and is inspiration behind new “old” locations in other cities and towns. Called a destination by travel journalist Charles Kuralt, the Mast Store is known for its wide collection of goods – something for everyone from one to 101. All locations are in rehabilitated buildings along revitalizing main streets in North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, and Tennessee. The merchandise includes traditional fashions, comfortable footwear, outdoor and travel gear, country gourmet foods, toys powered by imagination, and over 500 old-fashioned candies. The goal for employees at the Mast Store is to provide quality goods at fair prices with old-fashioned, friendly service. In addition to physical locations, the Mast Store has an online store where guests can wander virtual aisles filled with the same goods. Big news to share!
The DNA of one longtime Boone business will now permanently live inside another, thanks to the successful purchase of M-Prints by Chamber Summit Member, Mast General Store! Stuart Mangum of M-Prints helped countless businesses, organizations, and event organizers put well designed merchandise behind their brands. Through game day t-shirts, partnerships with non-profits, and his genuine desire to help customers, Stuart's legacy could not be passed to a more worthy partner, one that values tradition and the importance of community relationships. To further aid the transaction, Mast General Store partnered with Appalachian Commercial Real Estate to help them locate space for this new project. Help us congratulate Stuart on a successful career and best of luck to former Boone Area Chamber of Commerce Board Chair David Still as he and Mast Store team up on this new endeavor! #MemberMashup #bizinboone #boonenc #mastgeneral #shoplocal828 #retail #mprints #ncmountains #shopboone #dowtownboone #kingstreet #blueridge #partnership

"I felt it in my bones the first time I parked at the original store location: Mast isn’t a tourist trap. It is a museum of sorts – a living legend." We appreciate the kind words. The Original Mast Store is a special place, and we are so happy to carry on its legacy and tradition.

There’s an old adage about real estate investment that goes, “Buy land. They’re not making it anymore.” The line packs so much wit and wisdom that it has variations attributed to – not one but – two of America’s most notable quip-masters, Mark Twain and Will Rogers. Its truth is also precisely why we need land trusts.
