Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution Announces Matson Partnership to Protect Whales. Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) today announced a collaboration with Matson to develop new technology aimed at protecting whales by reducing risk of collisions with ships. Matson has committed $1 million to support WHOI’s research and development of thermal imaging cameras that can detect a whale’s body or spout at a distance, day or night. The goal is to provide ship captains with enough time to change course or slow down to avoid whales. In addition to its financial support, Matson has installed the special cameras on its vessels Manulani, Manoa, and Matson Kodiak to gather the real-world use data WHOI needs for its research and continued technology development. Today, after a small ceremony at Philly Shipyard in Pennsylvania, the cutting of steel plates began, initiating the construction on the first of Matson’s three new “Aloha Class” containerships. The three vessels are being designed for Matson’s Hawaii and China-Long Beach Express (CLX) services, with delivery to Matson in 2026 and 2027. All three vessels are designed to operate on either conventional marine fuels or liquefied natural gas (LNG) and will be delivered LNG-ready to help Matson achieve its 2030 greenhouse gas emissions reduction goal while also providing additional capacity and speed, benefitting our Hawaii service as well as the CLX.
