This week, I had the pleasure of speaking in the Closing Plenary of the Philanthropy Forward ‘24 Conference organized by Philanthropy Ohio. We explored topics related to the evolution of #philanthropy, opportunities and impacts of #artificialintelligence, and pioneering ideas or ‘hunches’ that will propel our sector into the future. At The Patrick J. McGovern Foundation, we are fortunate to work at the forefront of this evolution, learning from and with our partners who are constantly generating new ideas for how #ai and #datasolutions can contribute to a more equitable, thriving, and sustainable tomorrow. A few takeaways from the discussion: 💡To improve #equity and #justice in grantmaking, philanthropy needs to listen more, build trust, and hold ourselves accountable to not only our nonprofit partners, but also the communities we serve. 💡Integrating AI into philanthropy is about more than just improving operational efficiencies. Foundations need to build human-centered strategies and ethical frameworks for leveraging AI in support of community needs, stepping up as not just consumers, but architects of an AI-driven world. 💡The #arts and #humanities have just as much a place in our future as technical skills. Let’s continue encouraging our students to engage with the disciplines that reconnect us with our creativity, wonder, dreams, and shared humanity. 💡Even small ideas or ‘hunches’ have the potential to change the world, but only if they are shared. Philanthropy can play a key role in amplifying the ideas that communities generate, nurturing them into a plan, and translating that plan into action. A sincere thank you to the organizers of the conference and brilliant co-panelists, Lori Melichar, Ph.D at the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF), Valerie Goode at the San Francisco Foundation, and Carter Stewart at the Mellon Foundation for their fascinating insights! #ai #artificialintelligence #philanthropy #future #arts #humanities #equity #justice #aiforgood

What’s Next for the Global Digital Compact (GDC) Honored to have taken part in a thought-provoking roundtable co-hosted by Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and the The Patrick J. McGovern Foundation, focused on the next steps for the GDC over the coming 12 months. Key takeaways from the session where I emphasized a shift in how we approach AI governance and the global digital future: 1. Reducing Fragmentation in AI Governance: We must intentionally work towards harmonizing global efforts and avoiding disjointed, fragmented approaches to AI governance. 2. Listening to the Global Majority's Priorities: It's time for a different kind of engagement—one that listens closely to the realities and priorities of the global majority, especially when it comes to capacity building. This is not about imposing imagined needs, but focusing on the specific, context-driven priorities of countries and communities around the world. 3. Practical Use-Cases & Financial Reforms: As we advance, we need real-world, scalable AI applications and a strong push for finance reforms to support long-term sustainable development and inclusivity. Great to see old friends and meet new ones! Anna Makanju , Vilas Dhar (thank you for excellent moderation and session), Jane Munga, Martin Tisné, Minister Josephine Teo , Minister Paula Ingabire, Mme. Oxford Linda Bonyo :)
