The OSU Hatfield Marine Science Center High Ground student housing project is well underway! The project, designed by Mackenzie and led by O'Brien and Lucas Design Build, combines a unique design-build partnership, an innovative and efficient construction process to achieve a long-term vision for the Hatfield Marine Science Center. The building is designed to take advantage of panelized modules that are prefabricated offsite by a local manufacturer. These are now being assembled onsite, supporting an efficient construction process and a sustainable approach. “This complex was conceived as a response to the housing shortage in the Newport area, and it will ease a portion of the local housing demand,” Hatfield said on their website. “The complex will include 72 studio-style apartments and five two-bedroom family units. The new housing will be a quick walk from the Hatfield campus and located outside of the tsunami zone.”

Mackenzie Principal, Architect, and Board Member Alison Hoagland spoke on a panel yesterday at the Net Zero 2024 Conference by Verdical Group in Anaheim, California. The panel she spoke on was made up of Green Building Initiative members discussing pressure points and realities in the decision-making process on the way to meeting net zero objectives. They also discussed policy and regulatory movements toward net zero portfolios, new programs for third-party reviews, upcoming changes in ESG reporting, and definitions, "including the new White House definition of zero emissions buildings."
Had a wonderful time today at the Net Zero Conference. Great insights and learning as well as big idea sharing. It was my honor to speak on a panel discussion today with these amazing women, Vicki Worden, Michelle German, Brenna S. Walraven, Kate Callahan. Thank you Green Building Initiative for inviting me to add my voice to this conversation. #netzeroconference

Last week, summer interns from Mackenzie toured Project Whiskers, a new three-story facility for DoveLewis Veterinary Emergency & Specialty Hospital. This new facility will double DoveLewis’s facilities in Northwest Portland. It’s just across the street from their existing hospital. It will include specialized treatment areas, modern imagery spaces (MRI, x-ray, ultrasound), surgery rooms, among many other features. “This expansion ensures families can access comprehensive veterinary care, seamlessly integrating immediate, intensive, and specialty services in one centralized location, similar to human healthcare models,” according to DoveLewis. Mackenzie designed the facility and Skanska is constructing it. DoveLewis anticipates being able to begin treatment services in November 2024.
