We recently completed a litter pick on Sycamore Road in Budore, near our MRF, in response to a build-up of sporadic litter along the road. A little spring clean was just what the area needed! Occasional fly-tipping and litter, whether large or small, can negatively impact our neighbours, the environment, and local wildlife. Celebrating Women in Construction Week and International Women’s Day Introducing Jackie, our dedicated Senior Admin Assistant at John McQuillan Contracts, with an incredible 18 years in the construction industry! Every day, she liaises with engineers, manages work schedules, processes subcontractor invoices, and ensures all plant equipment is recorded accurately—keeping everything running smoothly behind the scenes. After many years working in the gambling and leisure industry, she decided to embrace a new challenge in construction, and the journey has been both exciting and rewarding. She loves the challenges of her role and the part she plays in the company’s success. One of the challenges she faced was working closely with engineers, who are all men. By getting to know their roles and understanding how her work supports them, she has overcome this challenge. The daily and weekly work schedules have helped her build strong relationships with the team. To encourage more women to join construction, she believes in promoting the variety of challenges the industry offers, showing that it’s a dynamic environment where women can truly thrive. Her advice to young women: “If you're looking for a career with interesting challenges, go for it! This week, we’re celebrating two important events: Women in Construction Week and International Women’s Day! Both highlight the vital role women play in shaping industries like construction, where traditionally male dominated roles are being redefined. These events raise awareness and promote inclusion, encouraging more women to step into challenging, rewarding careers in construction and beyond. Let’s meet some of the amazing women contributing to the success of McQuillan Companies Meet Cheryl, our Transport Supervisor at McQuillan Quarries. She’s been in the construction industry and part of our team for just over 4 years. Every day, she oversees the transport planning and operations for our Quarry, playing a vital role in keeping everything running smoothly. When asked about her experience as a woman in the industry, she shared that initially, it was a challenge to have her voice heard in a male-dominated environment. While progress has been made, there’s still more room for growth. “Don’t let the idea of a male-dominated world put you off,” she says. “It’s rewarding to find your place and show that women can thrive here too!” She also highlighted how the industry can better support women: making sites more accessible with proper facilities for women. Simple changes like this can make a huge difference! To young women considering a career in construction, her advice is clear: "Go for it!
