"It started with a Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation-funded project at Virginia Commonwealth University’s (VCU) College of Engineering, focused on using advanced technologies to develop a more cost-effective way to manufacture the HIV/AIDS therapy, nevirapine. In 2017, additional funding from the Gates Foundation allowed for the university to officially establish the Medicines for All Institute (M4ALL) and apply its optimized active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) development platform to a broader array of lifesaving vaccines and treatments." Medicines for All Institute is proud to be a part of the changing landscape of the State of Virginia and all of the work being done to improve access to medicines globally.

Building a Healthy Future for All
About us
The Medicines for All Institute, operating under the auspices of the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Engineering, has developed an innovative model that reduces the cost of manufacturing treatments, such as HIV/AIDS therapies, by accelerating the creation of more efficient ways of synthesizing the active pharmaceutical ingredients in the medications. With funding from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the Institute’s impact expands well beyond HIV/AIDS, as the process that reduces the cost per kilogram of specific drug targets can be applied to other medicines as well. While meeting an urgent health care need today, the Medicines for All Institute also signals dramatic change in future pharmaceutical manufacturing technologies.

M4ALL is proud to contribute to the USAID-funded PQM+ program and to partner with US Pharmacopeia and Chemical Process Technologies on this important project to make #TB treatment more accessible. We have had the privilege of working on low-cost processes for several high-priority TB drugs and will continue to support the #TB community to increase access to life saving medicines. https://lnkd.in/gUnjkRmW #WorldTBDay #YesWeCan #endTB
The USAID-funded PQM+ program is partnering with Chemical Process Technologies Process Technologies in #SouthAfrica for the technology transfer of the active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) rifapentine, a drug that treats and prevents #TB. This will add local manufacturing capacity to the African market, making TB treatment more accessible and affordable. PQM+ worked with Virginia Common Wealth University to support development of a more efficient and cost-effective approach to synthesizing and manufacturing the rifapentine API. The program is also partners with the South African Health Products Regulatory Authority to strengthen capacity for API review and inspection. As many in the TB community prepare to gather in Paris next week for the International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease (The Union) Conference, M4ALL is pleased to share our work on improving the manufacturing processes of active pharmaceutical ingredients (API) for priority TB drugs: bedaquiline, pretomanid, sutezolid and OPC-167832. These improved processes have the potential to lower raw material costs and improve manufacturability of these drugs. All of the processes are freely available and published open access on our website: https://lnkd.in/dsA6yFcs. If you are interested in partnering with us to use this work, please reach out to the team at m4all@vcu.edu. We will provide spotlights on each of these projects leading up to the conference next week: Bedaquiline: M4ALL developed two processes that demonstrate the potential to reduce the raw material cost for the active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) of bedaquiline fumarate ("bedaquiline"). Project Details: https://lnkd.in/dSb-5XHS Pretomanid: M4ALL worked with several collaborators whose collective improvements to the API synthetic process could provide a safer route to a key intermediate and allow for the use of commodity starting materials, thus providing the API at lower raw material cost. Project Details: https://lnkd.in/dQeRZX4S Sutezolid: M4ALL made improvements to the synthesis of a key intermediate of sutezolid which could lower raw material costs of the API. Project Details: https://lnkd.in/dzEPX3Q9 OPC-167832: M4ALL developed a concise process to prepare the key dihydroquinolone intermediate used to make the API by using commodity raw materials. Medicines for All is a proud member of the Alliance for Building Better Medicine and partner to so many innovative organizations in the Richmond-Petersburg area who are working to make advances in pharmaceutical manufacturing. We are grateful for the recognition of the region as a designated U.S. Economic Development Administration Tech Hub and are excited to continue to our collaborations to ensure that medicines are accessible to all who need them. From our founder and CEO, Frank Gupton: “The research at the Medicines for All Institute at Virginia Commonwealth University over the past decade was foundational to the building of an APM cluster in the Region, but without the strong partnerships we’ve developed through our work as an Alliance we would not have had the opportunity to change the landscape for medicine manufacturing for the nation and beyond. The shared successes over the past several years are extraordinary and we’re excited to see it grow and amplify through the investments of the EDA and this designation as an APM Tech Hub." #partnership #medicine #manufacturing #techhub #innovation
We are thrilled to share that our Advanced Pharma Manufacturing consortium application led by Alliance member, CCAM - Commonwealth Center for Advanced Manufacturing has been designated as a 2023 U.S. Economic Development Administration Tech Hub #TechHubs. We are now among 30 other nationally recognized Tech Hub designees from a pool of nearly 400 applicants.
