Empowering leaders to catalyze solutions to the world’s most pressing and complex health challenges.
About us
As the first and only School of Global Health in the nation, Meharry Medical College is advancing its work to eliminate global health equities. The school is an outgrowth of the Institute of Global Health Equity, and fills an important gap in the global healthcare continuum as it will be taking a new and more holistic approach to global health. Presently, global public health education tends to focus on population-wide interventions. The School of Global Health will take a multidisciplinary and multi sectoral approach to health and economic improvement. Future degree programs will focus on four initial areas: Political Determinants of Health, Mental Health, Population Health, and Health Communications.

President, The Root Cause Coalition | Assistant Professor, Global Food Institute at The George Washington University | “Transforming Food Systems & Health Equity while Advocating for Sustainable Solutions”
We're on an incredible mission at The Root Cause Coalition! I had the honor and privilege of touching base with the one and only Daniel Dawes last week to plan around critical legislative and policy issues that impact health equity and develop opportunity areas for essential effects of strategy at all levels of our work from federal to local engagement. Daniel has dedicated his career to addressing health equity issues impacting vulnerable, under-resourced, and marginalized populations. He is an internationally recognized health policy expert and attorney. He is the Senior Vice President of Global Health & Executive Director at the Institute of Global Health Equity at Meharry Medical College. Before this role, Daniel was the Executive Director of the Morehouse School of Medicine, Satcher Health Leadership Institute, and professor of health law, policy, and management in the Department of Community Health and Preventive Medicine. He has been a long-standing and engaged friend and advocate to TRCC. Thanks for the warm welcome, Daniel Dawes, and let’s make magic!

Last night was all about connecting communities and promoting health through the power of mapping! I started with a session in Garrett County, Maryland, collaborating with middle school students and teachers on a community mapping project to address local environmental and health issues like river pollution and waste management. Despite being in a remote rural area, these students were highly engaged and eager to explore how mapping can help identify and solve these challenges. Their commitment to protecting their community's environment and health led to some truly meaningful discussions! Later, I transitioned to a virtual lecture with elementary school students in the Philippines, focusing on community mapping to understand local health and environmental concerns. Although connecting virtually can be challenging, the students' enthusiasm and energy made the session incredibly rewarding. It was a powerful reminder that community engagement can make a significant impact, regardless of distance! Through community mapping, I am dedicated to guiding diverse groups—from young children to older adults—in exploring their communities, understanding local environmental and health issues, and inspiring them to take action. Seeing how these activities empower communities to create healthier and more sustainable environments is always inspiring. Everything is interconnected, and together we can make a difference! #CommunityMapping #Health #Education #Environment #YouthEngagement #Sustainability #SchoolofGlobalHealth #GIS #LocalImpact #GlobalAwareness
