  • September is National Suicide Prevention Month. As we reflect on those whose lives have been affected by suicide, we also take time to focus on the resources and conversations that can help respond to suicide in our communities. Some Statistics* 💚 Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the U.S., accounting for more than 1% of all deaths. It is the second leading cause of death among people ages 15-24. 💚 More years of life are lost to suicide than to any other single cause except heart disease and cancer. 💚 Nine of out 10 people who attempt suicide and survive do not go on to complete suicide at a later date. Resources like The California Peer Run Warm Line and MHASF support groups promote peer connection and offer support that leads to suicide prevention in the long run. Holistic community resources allows peers to receive support well before crisis arises. In the last year, 63% of Warm Line contacts who responded to our survey reported a reduction in distress after reaching out to MHASF’s California Peer Run Warm Line. MHASF's Peer Run Warm Line is here for you 24/7. Call or Text 855-600-WARM (9276) to speak with a counselor. #peer #warmline #mentalhealth #peersupport #suicideawareness *Information source from Mental Health America website

  • The power of mutuality can be life-changing in mental health support. One way MHASF supports our community is connecting through mutuality. Since our warm line counselors are peers, we lead with what we have in common with the people who reach out to us. Ten years of mutuality from us means ten years of expertise in our own experience. MHASF's Peer-Run Warm Line is here for you 24/7. Call or Text 855-600-WARM (9276) to speak with a counselor.  #peer #warmline #mentalhealth #peersupport

  • Today, for Women’s Equality Day, we honor the achievements and contributions of women throughout history and continue the fight for gender equality. On this day let’s reflect on how far we’ve come since the passage of the 19th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution in 1920, and commit to creating a world where everyone has equal opportunities. To all the incredible women making a difference every day—thank you for your strength, resilience, and leadership. Together, we can push for progress and ensure equality is a reality for all. #WomensEqualityDay #GenderEquality #EmpowerWomen

The date was selected to commemorate the 1920 certification of the 19th amemndment to the Constitution, granting women the right to vote. The observance of Women's Equality Day not only commemorates the passage of the 19th ammendment, but also calls attention to women's continuing efforts toward full equality. Celebrate w/ us by sharing with others!"
  • 🎊 Happy Transgender History Month! 🏳️⚧️ We are so lucky to be located in city which has been pivotal for transgender history. Despite August being declared Transgender History Month by Mayor London Breed in 2021, many don’t know the historical roots that were laid in San Francisco. An event called Compton’s Cafeteria Riots of 1966, occurred in the Tenderloin district and is known as the first large-scale act of resistance of transgender and queer individuals against police in the United States. This took place 3 years before The Stonewall Riots in New York. In current times we continue this legacy by making spaces where Transgender people can be supported. Our Trans Umbrella support group is one group where Trans people can find community and support where they are not just accepted but centered to receive culturally relevant support from their peers. • August is Intersectionality Awareness Month! What is intersectionality? Intersectionality is a concept developed by Kimberlé Crenshaw that explores how different parts of social identities—such as race, gender, sexuality, class, and disability—intersect and interact to create an individual's experiences of privilege and oppression. It emphasizes that people do not experience discrimination or inequality in a vacuum but rather through how different parts of a person’s identity interacts with the society around them. Understanding that there are layers to privilege and systems of oppression can be just one step to building a more diverse and inclusive world. #intersectionality #intersectionalitymatters #mentalhealth #intersectional

    • Intersectionality is a term originally coined by a scholar and theorist Kimberle Crenchaw in 1989. As a concept, intersectionality considers the identities we hold (such as our gender identity, race, nationality, ethnicity, social class, sexual orientation, physical ability, body size, religion, and other identity markers) and the ways these "intersect". It addresses how our identities are embedded within interlocking systems of power, such as racism and sexism.
  • At The Warm Line, we believe each person is the expert of their own experience. As peers with lived experience of mental health challenges, we and our callers share common experiences of pain, extreme states, fear, and despair, as well as joy, self-compassion, healing, and living our lives towards recovery. MHASF's Peer-Run Warm Line is here for you 24/7. Call or Text 855-600-WARM (9276) to speak with a counselor. #PeerSupportSepcialist #peersupport #mentealhealth #mentalhealthrecovery

  • If you were at the San Francisco Pride Parade this year, you may have seen MHASF staff marching in our contingent. If you weren’t there, you can watch this video recap to experience it yourself! Pride was invigorating and made us feel so full of love and hope. In these days when there is so much darkness—with tragedies happening both across the world and right here in our own neighborhoods — we needed the reminder that we have support through community. The best part was we got to go out and raise awareness for The California Peer-Run Warm Line by passing out cards with our number on it. According to Mental Health America, “LGBTQ+ individuals face health disparities linked to societal stigma, discrimination, and denial of their civil and human rights. Discrimination against LGBTQ+ persons has been associated with high rates of psychiatric disorders, substance abuse, and suicide.” We are grateful for the opportunity to help with bridging that gap via our Peer-Run Warm Line. We were so happy to gather with our LGBTQ+ siblings and celebrate the diversity in our community. Happy Pride! 🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️✨ Call or Text 855-600-WARM (9276) to speak with a peer counselor 24/7 #Pride #PeerWarmLine #mentalhealth #lgbtq #lgbtqia

  • 🎉 July is Disability Pride Month! ♿ It's a time to celebrate diversity, advocate for accessibility, and honor the achievements of individuals with disabilities. Did you know that the disability community is one of the largest and most diverse marginalized communities, encompassing all genders, ages, abilities, ethnicities, socio-economic statuses and races? For this reason, it’s imperative we learn from one another to build bridges to a more accessible world. Let's embrace inclusion, break down barriers, and promote a world where everyone can thrive. Together, we're stronger! 💪💙 #DisabilityPride #AccessibilityMatters #CelebrateDiversity

    • In the top right corner is a dark blue rectangle that reads "Disability pride month celebrates disables persons embracing their disabilities as integral parts of who they are, reclaiming siability in public and interacting fully with their disabilities out in the open, and rejecting shame and internalized ableism. -American Bar Association" on the right top corner person who is a leg amputee using crutches, the bottom right is person in front of the disability pride flaf who has a prosthetic arm
