Committing to Zero for MEP Systems

About us

MEP 2040 is a movement to radically reduce total carbon emissions associated with building systems through collective action. The original MEP 2040 Challenge from the Carbon Leadership Forum: “All systems engineers shall advocate for and achieve net zero carbon in their projects: operational carbon by 2030 and embodied carbon by 2040.” The Carbon Leadership Forum issued the Challenge in the fall of 2021. A group of leaders from MEP firms responded to the Challenge and collectively established a Commitment for you to join. Moving forward, this group of leaders will be responsible for convening signatories around a common goal. The MEP 2040 Commitment: * Establish a company plan * Request low-GWP refrigerants * Request EPDs * Participate in Forums

  • We're looking forward to seeing you at the NESEA conference this year in Boston! Join MEP2040 Steering Committee member Julie Janiski and a panel of collective action enthusiasts, following a opening keynote on the same theme by Andrew Himes, on Thursday May 20th. Julie will represent the MEP 2040 Commitment alongside many other fabulous individuals representing more collective impact organizations: Michelle Lambert, CPHC, LEED BD C, Env SP (Carbon Leadership Forum), Nadav Malin (Green Commons, LLC), Lori Ferriss, AIA, PE (Built Buildings Lab), Michael Gryniuk (SE2050), Kate Stephenson (BuildingEnergy Bottom Lines), James Kitchin (Bio-Based Materials Collective) and Chris Magwood (Builders for Climate Action).

The BuildingEnergy Boston Conference and Trade Show is just two weeks away! Join us on March 20-21 at the Westin Boston Seaport District and take part in an inspiring community of over 1,000 practitioners in the fields of high-performance building, design, and energy efficiency from all around the Northeast. ---> Explore this year's lineup of speakers: https://lnkd.in/efxSuRvQ ---> Two days of in-depth peer reviewed sessions: https://lnkd.in/eCrfJwYR For our 50th anniversary, we are planning two exciting days of in-depth accredited sessions and cross-disciplinary learning, all centered on the theme of "Building the Movement." If you are interested in transforming our built environment, this conference is for you!

  • We're thrilled to announce that MEP 2040 has just welcomed its 100th signatory organization! This landmark achievement represents a growing commitment within our industry to address climate change through sustainable MEP engineering.   When we launched this initiative, we envisioned a future where MEP engineering firms would unite behind ambitious climate goals. Today, that vision is becoming reality as 100 organizations who have helped us to:   -Create MEP-specific decarbonization guidance -Request low-GWP refrigerants and Environmental Product Declarations for MEP systems -Advocate for policies that advance the MEP portions of whole life carbon   To our 100 signatories: Thank you for your leadership and commitment to transforming our industry. To MEP firms still considering: The time to join is now. Our collective impact grows with each new signatory, and your expertise is essential to this transformation. Your clients are increasingly demanding climate-responsive solutions—joining MEP 2040 positions you at the forefront of this shift.   Learn more about becoming a signatory at MEP2040.org

  • 🌍 Ductwork Embodied Carbon Insights   Our MEP 2040 Whole Life Carbon Pilot and Beginner's Guide to MEP Embodied Carbon reveal critical insights into duct embodied carbon that can transform how we approach airside system design.   Key design considerations include: 1️⃣ Material Selection Matters: Comparing duct materials like aluminum, hot-dip galvanized steel, and stainless steel shows variations in upfront embodied carbon. 2️⃣ Insulation Impact: EPDM insulation demonstrates dramatically different upfront embodied carbon characteristics compared to unfaced glass wool. 3️⃣ System Configuration: Exploring the nuanced relationships between centralized vs. decentralized airside systems can unlock carbon reduction opportunities.   Are you leveraging these insights in your mechanical system designs? How are you approaching embodied carbon in ductwork?   #MEP2040 #EmbodiedCarbon #SustainableDesign #BuildingEfficiency

  • PIPING EMBODIED CARBON INSIGHTS The soon to be published (April 22nd!) Beginner's Guide to MEP Embodied Carbon reveals striking differences in embodied carbon across piping materials and systems.   Key design considerations emerging from our pilot study: 1️⃣ Compare piping types with equivalent functional performance 2️⃣ Evaluate materiality differences in vertical/horizontal routing 3️⃣ Factor in temperature differentials when sizing systems   What's your experience with embodied carbon in piping systems? Are you considering material choices in your carbon reduction strategies?   Join the conversation and help us accelerate the path to MEP whole life carbon reduction. Together, we can transform how building systems are designed and specified.   #MEP2040 #EmbodiedCarbon #ClimateAction #SustainableDesign

  • 🏢 Let's expand our understanding of Building Functional Equivalence! While traditional characteristics like climate zone, gross floor area, and building use type are essential benchmarks, what OTHER factors do you consider crucial when comparing buildings? From our experience in the field, factors like occupancy patterns, equipment density, and operating hours can significantly impact building performance comparisons. What characteristics would YOU add to create more meaningful building comparisons? Share your expertise below! #BuildingPerformance #MEP2040 #SustainableDesign #BuildingEngineering

  • Imagine a future in which we have robust, comparable datasets of MEP embodied and operational carbon data, data that would allow us to make informed decisions on the passive and active system selections for our buildings, thereby empowering meaningful whole life carbon reductions.   That's the future we want to build through our MEP Whole Life Carbon Pilot. If you have a project that you would like to evaluate through the Pilot Program, please sign up here: https://lnkd.in/e9N6xMvB
