Burnsville High School junior Feven Tesfaye and a representative on the Minnesota Youth Council said a lot of the teens growing up during the digital age are finding most of their social interactions online and could feel left out if completely banned from social media. She recommended that parents teach best practices with their child and navigate the internet safely and responsibly. “I think there are some students, or some young people who can handle social media very well because at a young age, they were taught the good things about the digital space and then the bad things,” Tesfaye said. “But on the other hand, there are other students who have never heard of good habits when going on social media platforms, and that negativity and the relationship with social media greatly impacts their mental health as well.” https://lnkd.in/gmDqbR-P

On Thursday, September 12th - in the House and Senate - the co-chairs of the #NationalService Congressional Caucus introduced the Promoting Service through AmeriCorps Act. The bill sponsored by Sen. Chris Coons, Sen. Bill Cassidy, Rep. Doris Matsui, and Rep. Garret Graves will strengthen and expand AmeriCorps. The PSA Act provides more opportunities for Americans to serve, expands benefits to support recruitment and improve the member experience, bolsters pathways to education and employment for all AmeriCorps members, and authorizes federal funding for AmeriCorps through 2029. Minnesota Alliance With Youth staff and AmeriCorps members were proud to spend the day serving our community by packing meals at the 9/11 Day of Service event in St. Paul. Thank you to the hundreds of Minnesotans who gave a day to help our neighbors experiencing food insecurity.

We ❤️LOVE❤️ AmeriCorps Promise Fellow Nicky's advice for folks thinking about doing a year of service: "What I would say is: DO IT! AmeriCorps is such an important program, and you can serve in any area you want. I have a friend who went to Washington state to help at an elementary school. Another friend went to Maine and built a house. You can do so many things — it really helps you discover what you might want to do someday." Thanks to ServeMinnesota for shining a spotlight on Nicky and his incredible service to Minnesota youth! https://lnkd.in/d84Bpbvk

Happy ONE YEAR work anniversary to our fantastic and fearless Executive Director Jim Davnie! 🎉 Thanks for being a great boss AND putting up with your team's shenanigans. 🤪

The good news? There was an increase in the number of students who regularly attended school last year. The bad news? There are still MANY that are not showing up regularly. Programs like Check & Connect: A Comprehensive Student Engagement Intervention and supports like on-site laundry can help... and so can our AmeriCorps Promise Fellows! https://lnkd.in/gqBsdDky

Say hello (or сайн уу) to Anarmaa! Anarmaa is joining the Alliance team as a Community Solutions Fellow with IREX from Mongolia, and will be working as our Youth Research Fellow until November! She hopes to engage in advocacy and policy work focused on youth involvement, climate action, research and data analysis, community engagement, and sustainability initiatives. She seeks to inspire young leaders, contribute to environmental conservation efforts, and promote evidence-based decision-making to foster a sense of environmental stewardship within communities. In her free time, Anarmaa enjoys collecting notebooks, exploring nature, spending cherished moments with her children, and finding satisfaction in the simple task of folding clothes. We're so happy to have you here!

K-12 education focused leader committed to equity, quality, and results. Young people do better when adults collaborate.
Powerful testifying today at the Student Attendance and Truancy Legislative Study Group. I was able to stress that the Minnesota Alliance With Youth brings solutions to the crisis of chronic absenteeism. I left the hearing with a great deal of hope and optomism. The amount of consensus on the challenge was notabke to me. So was the recognition that relationships with caring adults is key to engaging with students in positive, productive, and accountable way. Alliance Promise Fellows and our new Youth Mental Health Corps are uniquely trained and prepared to be the positive difference for students. Excited to collaborate with the legislators on the Study Group and with our nonprofit, school district, and county friends who were also testifying today.
