Christopher Berry, William J. and Alicia Townsend Friedman Professor at Harris School of Public Policy at the University of Chicago and director of the Mansueto Institute for Urban Innovation, University of Chicago, will take on the role of Civic Leadership Academy faculty director, housed in the Harris School's Center for Effective Government. CLA provides leaders with the tools and knowledge needed to drive effective civic and political reform. “The Civic Leadership Academy is a cherished institution at the university, and indeed throughout Chicago,” Berry said. “CLA is one of the most direct ways that the University of Chicago serves and engages its community, and it has never been more necessary. The impact of the program is evident in both the enthusiasm of its alumni and their accomplishments. I am thrilled and honored to continue the work begun by Will and Sadia and to bring the Mansueto Institute as a partner in this most important endeavor.”

Last Monday, Tiffany S., Urban Leader in Residence at the Mansueto Institute for Urban Innovation at University of Chicago, presented “'Community Intelligence' in Policy Development and Research.” Smith shared learnings from her professional history in the housing world, which includes Heartland Next, Neighborhood Housing Services of Chicago, and NCST (National Community Stabilization Trust) among many other roles. Smith encouraged those working in urban spaces to be mindful of the contexts within communities they look to do work. Community intelligence, to her, includes cultural literacy, emotional intelligence, and cultural intelligence - three critical factors to consider in the context of community history and trauma. This Monday, Nicole Marwell, Professor and Faculty Director, Master’s Program in Social Sector Leadership, University of Chicago Crown Family School of Social Work, Policy, and Practice, presented “Mismeasuring Impact: How Randomized Controlled Trials Threaten the Nonprofit Sector.” Marwell shared findings from her forthcoming co-authored book that explains why today’s nonprofit sector probably shouldn’t conduct randomized controlled trials (RCTs) to evaluate the effectiveness of their programs–despite being widely embraced as the “gold standard” for nonprofit evaluation.
