About us
MKSK is a collective of Planners, Urban Designers, and Landscape Architects, founded in 1990, who are passionate about the interaction between people and place. We are an employee-owned practice with a network of twelve metropolitan studios in Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, New York and the District of Columbia. MKSK works to solve the pressing issues in our cities and communities, and build places where people want to live. We work with communities and clients to reimagine, plan, and design dynamic environments for the betterment of all. MKSK approaches planning and design with a clear understanding that each place is unique and has economic, social, environmental, historical, and cultural influences which should be explored through thoughtful, context sensitive design. We help communities and our clients meet the challenges of changing global conditions through the MKSK LAB for Climate and Biodiversity Resilience. We shape place to improve lives, and we share our transformational stories and the power of strong planning and design to inspire ourselves, our peers, and the world to work together for the common good. Together we plan and design a world in which we all want to live.

Exciting News for Upper Arlington! The Envision Henderson Corridor Plan was unanimously adopted by Upper Arlington City Council, setting the stage for the transformation of this key corridor! This plan is the result of extensive community engagement, with more than 800 residents and stakeholders providing input to shape a shared vision. Mayor Ukeme Awakessien Jeter called this corridor “the last frontier for the city” and emphasized the significance of this vision document in sparking the next steps: “This is a very thorough document … this starts the next important discussion.” The plan lays out a clear and actionable roadmap for the future, focusing on: ✔️ Creating a safer, more inviting public realm through streetscape enhancements and pedestrian-friendly improvements ✔️ Reinforcing the corridor’s unique identity with thoughtful redevelopment opportunities like the Northern Gateway and Live + Work Neighborhood ✔️ Aligning with regional initiatives such as LinkUS and the City of Columbus’ Zone In policy to position Upper Arlington for long-term success MKSK, in partnership with Burgess & Niple and Brian Kent Jones Architecture, was honored to collaborate with the City to develop this plan and ensure it reflects both community aspirations and implementable strategies. As City Manager Steve Schoeny noted, “It helps to have folks involved who are part of the community. Huge compliment to the MKSK and Burgess & Niple team.” Now, with the plan in place, implementation begins! Stay tuned for more updates as Upper Arlington moves forward to bring this vision to life. MKSK, Cincinnati, OH | Studio Works Located just south of historic downtown Montgomery, Ohio, Montgomery Quarter provides a balance of retail, office space, dining, and multifamily housing, contributing an economic influx to the City of Montgomery. The development of the Montgomery Quarter site transformed a previously vehicle-oriented gateway at the terminus of a major arterial highway into a welcoming, urban, mixed-use gateway. This development replaced two automobile dealerships and a highway ramp with an integrated, walkable, mixed-use development at the threshold of Montgomery’s historic core. The impact of Montgomery Quarter extends beyond its geographic boundaries, influencing the economic vitality of the entire downtown area. At 10.6 acres, Montgomery Quarter expands the contributing area of Montgomery’s downtown core by over 60 percent. The scale and character of the Gateway redevelopment follow the urban design principles that have shaped the City’s Heritage District. The development utilizes a street grid that strategically places intersections at the Main Street and Montgomery Road split, and replaces the eastbound Regan Highway on-ramp with a roundabout. This design more than doubles the developable area while reducing the automobile-oriented paved footprint. Secondary streets running parallel to Montgomery Road provide efficient internal access and minimize the number of curb cuts required along Montgomery Road. With a large, community-focused central green and retail and dining spaces oriented toward the public amenity, Montgomery Quarter is a pedestrian-focused, multi-use development. The streets are scaled according to traditional neighborhood design principles that prioritize the pedestrian experience, with larger parking areas located behind or below building masses. The retail spaces are focused on experience-based retailers that will help animate and activate the City’s lower downtown. The City of Lancaster Revitalization and Improvement Zone (CRIZ) Authority, managed by Lancaster City Alliance, has launched the Lancaster Stadium District Small Area Plan, a collaborative initiative to establish a shared vision for the more than 50-acre area roughly bound by Harrisburg Avenue, North Prince Street, and West Liberty Street. MKSK is serving as the lead of the multidisciplinary team, along with TAIT and RGS Associates. The team will engage stakeholders to explore the various opportunities in land use, connectivity, and economic development, while utilizing the existing investing and financing tools CRIZ Authority has to offer. The Planning process was officially kicked off on February 26, with a meeting at Penn Medicine Park, attended by over 40 stakeholders, which included district property owners, business leaders, municipal officials, and community representatives. “The Stadium District represents a unique opportunity to connect past planning efforts with actionable next steps,” said Jeremy Young, Acting Managing Director of the CRIZ Authority and Director of Community & Economic Development at Lancaster City Alliance. “This process will allow us to engage stakeholders, assess infrastructure and redevelopment needs, and craft a clear implementation strategy that attracts investment and enhances the district’s role as a vibrant part of the city. By leveraging the financing tools available through CRIZ, we can help ensure that the vision developed through this plan leads to real, transformative projects.” Learn more about the plan here: https://lnkd.in/eq4MS8Mz #MKSK #ShapePlace #PlacesforPeople #LandscapeArchitecture #UrbanDesign #Planning #Design #ASLA #APA #ULI #LancasterStadiumDistrict #LancasterPA

In honor of International Women’s Day this week, we are highlighting the Spirit of Women Park. The Chlois G. Ingram Spirit of Women Park was designed by MKSK/OLIN to honor the lives of extraordinary women. The park space has been relocated and creatively re-imagined as a memorial park that honors the healing impact of women and Chlois’ legacy—“With a spirit of caring, compassion, and kindness, the nourishment she shared healed hearts and restored hope”—a quote prominently featured on the inscription on the park’s commemorative signage. The park, anchored by a dramatic Donor Fountain, also includes a 175-foot-long crescent shaped reflecting pool which, features 1,515 glass tiles etched with donor supplied artwork from the former park’s ceramic tiles. The Donor Fountain is framed by sculpted landforms, bluestone paving, and native plantings to help create a reflective and compelling place for patients, visitors, and staff. A granite dedication monument frames glass panels honoring the park's namesake. Spirit of Women Park provides a place of respite and reflection for caregivers and staff, to reduce stress and improve their well-being. Settings like this new park have been proven to have a positive impact on patient healing. MKSK, Washington, DC | Studio Works A Connected Community: Southwest Neighborhood Library & Park With a thoughtful, site-specific approach, our team transformed the Southwest Neighborhood Library & Park into a seamless, community-centered space. By reorienting the library’s entrance closet to the nearby park and creating a welcoming porch terrace—the building now enjoys a dynamic connection between learning and outdoor recreation. The terrace’s broad steps invite movement, gathering, and quiet moments of reflection, while reinforcing pedestrian connections across the neighborhood. The adjacent 3rd and I Street Park was carefully revitalized, preserving a mature grove of Willow Oaks while introducing new pathways, enhanced planting, and an enriched understory layer that supports biodiversity. Thoughtful refinements to circulation and gathering spaces ensure the park remains a cherished urban oasis for all. By weaving together architecture, landscape, and community, this project enhances everyday experiences and maximizes social benefit—creating a vibrant, inclusive space for future generations.
