About us
MOSA Certified Organic is the second-largest organic certifier in the United States, and the largest certifier of livestock and dairy. We currently certify over 2000 clients in 20 states, including nearly 300 organic processors, distributors, retailers and restaurants. MOSA began in 1999 before the National Organic Standards were yet developed and MOSA, like certifiers across the country, used their own set of standards to determine organic qualifications. The National Organic Standards were implemented in 2002, and MOSA was among the very first USDA accredited agencies. MOSA is a fiscally-sound, stable, and well-respected nonprofit certification agency. We are a strong voice in the organic industry, and we work in partnership with the Accredited Certifiers Association, the National Organic Program, the National Organic Standards Board, Organic Materials Review Institute, and others. Our clients, staff, and board are all knowledgeable and experienced. MOSA currently has 36 staff and is headquartered in Viroqua, WI.

A little bit of celebratory cheer landed in the MOSA mailbox... The Accredited Certifiers Association (ACA) is celebrating 20 years, and MOSA has proudly been a member since the beginning. To mark the milestone, they sent us this great recognition placard—thanks, ACA! We look forward to the next 20 years of collaboration in organic certification! 🌱 🌎 💚 ℹ The ACA is a voluntary group of agencies certifying to the USA's organic standards. The ACA strives to ensure consistent implementation of the USDA Organic Regulations through collaboration and education. https://lnkd.in/eyaBq8hv #certifiedorganic #mosacertifiedorganic #USDAorganic

Mushrooms are neither plant nor animal, so which parts of the organic standards apply? Currently, the USDA Organic Regulations don't contain specific rules for mushroom production, but the process to change that has begun. Changes to the National Organic Standards are shaped by public input and National Organic Standards Board recommendations. A proposed rule to add mushroom and pet food standards was published on March 11, and over 3000 responses were submitted during the 60-day public comment period. The proposed rule would create more consistency for mushroom certification by: 🍄 establishing a section called Mushroom Production Practice Standard within the regulation, 🍄 requiring the use of certified organic spawn and substrates when commercially available, 🍄 creating compost production standards specific for compost used as a mushroom substrate. What's next? The National Organic Program will review the many comments to arrive at final rules for both mushroom and pet food production. As always, MOSA will update you as soon as we learn more! Are you a mushroom grower wanting your crop to be certified organic? Contact us! You don't need to wait until the final mushroom rule is published. MOSA has policies in place right now so that you can pursue organic certification of mushrooms when you're ready. #usdaorganic #mosacertifiedorganic #organicmushrooms #mushroomfarming

“The best thing I learned to do to prepare for my MOSA inspection was read my initial review letter,” said Jesse Veek, owner of Upbeet Produce in Edgerton, Wisconsin. Jesse is in his fourth year of growing organic produce and has been certified by MOSA since 2018. Jesse picks a rainy day before his inspection to prepare the items identified in the Initial Review letter. “The reviewer lets me know what questions I need to be prepared for and there’s a handy checklist at the bottom of the Initial Review letter that tells me what I need to have on hand. I know that the longer the inspection the more it will cost so I've reduced the inspection time by having my records ready." 📰 This is an excerpt from "Three Tips for Preparing for Your Organic Inspection" in the current issue of MOSA's Organic Cultivator Newsletter. MOSA livestock producers, will you be ready on January 2, 2025, for the Organic Livestock and Poultry Standards (OLPS) rule changes? The Organic Standards will be significantly strengthened with the OLPS to include specific rules for livestock living conditions, especially for poultry. New requirements for livestock transportation and slaughter will be added. Two actions for organic livestock farmers to take in 2024: 1. Read your Livestock or Poultry Organic Plan: are all questions answered fully and accurately? MOSA reviewers and inspectors are assessing farms this season using the new rules. 2. Contact MOSA to report changes to your Plan or to ask questions! For more information about OLPS, read the Certification Policy Update in Volume 22 Issue 1 of MOSA's Organic Cultivator Newsletter: https://lnkd.in/g5VqXXug
