Motherly's 7th Annual State of Motherhood Report launched today. The annual survey, with nearly 6,000 respondents, conveyed that today’s mothers continue to parent without adequate support. Key findings from this year include: Gen Z moms are signaling a continuing future birth rate decline: Today’s moms under 30 are 2 times as likely to NOT plan for more children than moms of the same age in 2019, citing financial, childcare, global, environmental and medical concerns (69% in 2024 vs. 35% in 2019). Childcare access and affordability issues continue to impact mothers’ ability to work: 66% of moms note that the stress and cost of childcare has made them consider leaving the workforce, up 14% from 2023. These sentiments are highest among Gen Z at 82%. One quarter of all moms report receiving regular financial support from their parents: Gen Z moms are twice as likely to have help from their parents compared to their own mothers' generations (Gen X+). In this election year, more than 85% of moms over 30 support federally mandated paid leave, regulation to address climate change, federally protected reproductive rights and increased gun control policies. Last week, as parents across the country prepared to send their kids back to school, US Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy issued an advisory saying that 4 in 10 parents are so stressed they *can’t function* most days. And wow, did he strike a chord for parents everywhere! According to the report, American parents are so stressed out by the high costs of childcare, education and health care that it has become a public health problem. Investing in child care may not solve the problem entirely, but when financial stress is the top reason why parents are struggling, making child care more affordable is a great place to start. According to the survey, the average parent receives around four emails a day related to their children, their school, and extracurricular activities. For those (like me) who are bad at math, that comes out to around 20 emails a week, or over 80 a month. How many emails do you receive about your kids school and activities each day?

In a new advisory report, U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy is sounding the alarm on the realities of parenting today, revealing just how dire the situation is for millions of parents of children under 18. In his report, Murthy cites a bleak statistic issued by the American Psychological Association (APA) in 2023: 41% of parents say that most days they are so stressed they cannot function and 48% call their stress “completely overwhelming.” #parenting #workingparents
