Motor Insurers' Bureau (MIB)

Non-profit Organizations

We exist to protect people from the devastation of uninsured and hit-and-run driving.

About us

MIB is a not-for-profit organisation founded in 1946 on the belief that no-one whose life had been changed by an uninsured driver should be left without the support they deserve. Today that has grown into a community of people and organisations tirelessly working to protect people from the devastation of uninsured and hit-and-run driving. We do it by compensating victims quickly, fairly and compassionately, and getting uninsured and hit-and-run drivers off our roads until it becomes a thing of the past. Our work and impact stretch further too. We manage services for the insurance industry and government to help keep costs down for UK motorists, and we manage the Insurance Fraud Bureau, which brings together insurers, partners and law-enforcement agencies in the fight against fraud.

  • To mark #BlackHistoryMonth at MIB, our REACH Network put on a delicious spread of authentic African and Caribbean cuisine and all to a wonderful soundtrack of reggae, afrobeats, R&B and soul. They have also placed posters and artifacts around the breakout area of our Milton Keynes office to encourage open discussion and to remember moments in history, achievements and contributions that black people have made in the United Kingdom. Samantha Mpanu-Malila (REACH Network chair) said, "Our Black History Month events are always highly anticipated each year and provide an amazing opportunity for MIB colleagues with Black heritage to showcase everything they love about their culture, as well as provide an opportunity to celebrate and reclaim the narratives of Black history." #WeAreMIB #Culture #BlackHistory

  • #OpDriveInsured is coming back for 2024! The MIB-led initiative will run 11-17 November. The Tier 1 NPCC (National Police Chiefs’ Council) campaign sees police forces across the UK take part in a week of increased activity targeting dangerous uninsured vehicles, ensuring there is nowhere to hide. In tandem, MIB will be coordinating a national public awareness campaign to educate drivers on the consequences of being uninsured and to drive positive behaviour change in those purposely or mistakenly driving uninsured. • Less than 1 in 3 young people with a mental health condition are currently getting access to NHS care and treatment they need. This isn’t good enough and things definitely need to change.  That’s why this #WorldMentalHealthDay, MIB is awash with yellow to raise awareness and funds for YoungMinds, showing young people that they are not alone with their mental health. Because we stand brighter, together.   #WeAreMIB #Fundraising #WMHD #MentalHealth #Support

  • Alongside supporting victims, one of our priorities this year has been finding new ways to influence behaviours that lead to uninsured driving. One way we’re doing that is by informing the next generation of motorists about the importance of being insured through our work with teachers and young people. Working with PSHE Association (Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education), we’ve developed a range of informative resources for teachers and young people. We’ve also been working with The Safety Centre: Hazard Alley, a local charity in Milton Keynes. Hazard Alley is the world’s first and leading interactive, immersive, and memorable safety education experience. The charity specialises in using realistic learning experiences to teach children, young people, and adults how to stay safe, understand risks, and avoid accidents. These early interventions are critical to achieving our vision of one day ending uninsured driving for good. Our CEO, Angus Eaton, was at the Association of British Insurers Motor Conference today, talking to industry colleagues about the shared challenges facing MIB and the insurance market. As always, Angus’ session highlighted the importance of collaboration and strong working relationships among insurers, the police, and the government in the fight against uninsured driving, tackling insurance fraud – and setting us up to succeed in a changing world. Angus covered: • How we’re working with insurers, the police and the new government to keep uninsured drivers off our roads • Work with insurers to modernise MIB’s data services through solutions such as Navigate • How we’re influencing the conversation around emerging trends, including autonomous vehicles, cyber security and new ways to get around • An update on our ongoing work on MIB’s future strategy with a focus on protecting people from uninsured driving and evolving our services to the industry’s changing needs.

  • Take it from someone who knows – uninsured drivers ruin people’s lives. For those who don’t know me, I’m Sundeep, a Large Loss Claims Specialist at MIB (the Motor Insurers’ Bureau), a not-for-profit that supports victims of uninsured and hit-and-run driving. I started working with MIB as a legal executive at a law firm and was inspired to join the team. So, when I got the call, I jumped at the opportunity. I do something meaningful every day In my team, we work on some of the most serious cases: spinal cord injuries, chronic pain, and people who are likely to need some level of care for the rest of their lives. We see cases where someone has been killed – and even young children with terrible injuries. That’s the grim reality of what we do, but helping people through it is also hugely rewarding. One of my cases involves a young man who has been paralysed. Despite everything he's endured, his optimism and determination to reclaim his life is truly inspiring. The most rewarding part of my role? Knowing that because we were there to help, he now has a real chance to do just that. It’s challenging too I manage a significant number of claims, each representing a family in need of help. Experience helps me manage the workload, but the weight of each case never lessens. As an organisation funded by insurers and, ultimately, all motorists, we can only help people we can prove through evidence have been victims of an uninsured or hit-and-run accident. That means a big part of my role is working with solicitors and the police to thoroughly investigate the circumstances of every claim. We’re also working to arrange treatment as fast as possible, which can make an enormous difference to a claimant’s recovery. I love being part of MIB and the important work we do here. It would take a very special opportunity for me to imagine doing anything else. #WeAreMIB

  • #OperationM8 last week saw thousands of vehicle registration plates checked against Navigate, the register of all live insurance policies within the UK. In under 12 hours, Police Scotland actioned: • 109 vehicle stops • 34 vehicle seizures for #UninsuredDriving • 3 arrests for driving under the influence of drink and/or drugs • 39 additional offences were identified (23% of all stops and 36% of those seized), leading to 21 prosecutions. These included one stolen vehicle, driving with no/expired driving licences, no MOT and no tax. We will continue working with police and partners, shaping initiatives and operations, to ensure those choosing to flout the law and drive uninsured have nowhere to hide. #DriveInsured

Police Scotland have partnered with MIB to spend the day tackling #UninsuredDriving along the M8 corridor. The third in a series of one-day operations across UK motorways led by MIB, Operation M8 has seen uninsured vehicles seized along the 60-mile length of the major road network from Edinburgh City Bypass to Langbank. As of 6pm today, 28 vehicles have been seized. Uninsured driving is, sadly, not a standalone issue. Over a third (36%) of the stops today uncovered secondary offences, including drug offences and vehicles in an unroadworthy condition. MIB has supported the forces to enable the dedicated resourcing of additional #PoliceOfficers, marked vehicles, ANPR cameras, control room operatives and intel staff. In addition, our law enforcement liaison officers have also joined officers at the roadside to provide a direct link to Navigate – the database of all live motor insurance policies - and the MIB Police Helpline, speeding up the process of confirming a vehicles insurance status.
