Kayla Read was thrilled to be expecting her first child when her 20-week anatomy scan led to a frightening revelation. After rounds of appointments with maternal-fetal medicine specialists and cardiologists, a suspected diagnosis of a rare condition, Ebstein's anomaly, was made. Kayla was referred to the Pediatric Cardiology team at MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital. She didn’t know it then, but the heart program was ranked #4 in the country by U.S. News & World Report and would soon move up to #2. This recognition was achieved, in part, by taking on cases that not many other hospitals would attempt because of their complexities. Just like Kayla and her baby's case. https://bit.ly/4eCQtsH

2-year-old Haven Hardy’s medical journey started in June of 2023 when she was diagnosed with a rare type of nephrotic syndrome after her mother noticed her body swelling. Kasey Hardy knew right away that Haven would need a kidney transplant, which started their yearlong journey at MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital. Haven’s story is just one example of the great work the Pediatric Nephrology team at MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital is doing. It comes just as U.S. News & World Report announced that it ranks No. 24 in pediatric nephrology across the country, moving up 24 spots from last year’s rankings. https://bit.ly/4ezE3lD

When an x-ray revealed Ewing's sarcoma in her leg, Cami was treated at MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children's Hospital. Chemotherapy helped, but radiation caused her heart to fail. Doctors implanted a ventricular assist device, but she later suffered a stroke, and needed a heart transplant. A day after being placed on the donor list, Cami received a heart. https://lnkd.in/e5CsUiXR
