  • On Friday, March 14, the community came together for the Go Red Heart Walk at the S.C. State House. The event was the Second Annual City Manager's Heart Walk in support of the City of Columbia's Go Red Campaign. The walk's purpose is to raise awareness about the importance of heart health for all ages in our community. This was the first year it was opened to the public, and Prisma Health’s Mobile Unit and Heart Hospital participated. The walk took place down Main Street and ended at the State House where vendors were set up to provide members of the community with information on health and wellness.

  • When Chelsea Williamson became an LPN last week, Kathy Pitts, RN, was on hand to do the pinning honors. Chelsea had asked Kathy, a nurse in the Nurse Family Partnership (NFP) program, to pin her because she’d been such a source of inspiration during Chelsea’s participation in the program as a first-time at-risk mom. “As a single mom, I’ve often questioned my ability to balance everything, but Nurse Kathy has been there to push me when I doubted myself. She is patient, compassionate and genuinely dedicated to her patients and coworkers. These are the traits I deeply admire and would like to adopt in my own nursing practice. Her ability to show empathy and care, especially for new moms, is something I strive to emulate in my own work.” NFP is a community health program for first-time moms that improves pregnancy and birth outcomes, child health and development, and family economic self-sufficiency. Each mom is partnered with a registered nurse early in her pregnancy and has ongoing health visits with that nurse through her child’s second birthday. By addressing the mothers' social risk factors, NFP nurses set families on a path toward a better, healthier future. Kathy said that Chelsea has been working on completing nursing school since shortly after enrolling in the program. “This is such a huge accomplishment for her, and I was completely honored when she asked if I would pin her at her nurse pinning ceremony,” she said. Chelsea has another graduation in June, when she completes the partnership program. Chelsea said Kathy gave her the confidence to work toward her LPN degree. And she plans to emulate Kathy’s compassion when she begins work as a nurse. “I want to lead with respect, creating an environment where everyone feels valued and supported,” she said. “I believe that leadership qualities such as empathy, effective communication and the ability to motivate others are crucial. My plan for leading others with respect involves listening actively to their concerns, offering guidance when needed, and always being approachable. By fostering trust and understanding, I hope to inspire confidence in others, just as Nurse Kathy has done for me.” #PrismaHealthProud

  • Baptist, Blount Memorial and Patewood hospitals are among the 300 hospitals in America recognized by The Women's Choice Award as top care facilities for women in 2025. The award notes that women have structural anatomical differences, hormones and genetics that factor into orthopedic treatment in male versus female patients, and Women's Choice bases the recognitions on clinical performance, patient satisfaction and appropriate accreditations. #PrismaHealthProud
