Preparing frontline youth for the world that they'll inherit. 🔮🌱

About us

Mycelium Youth Network (MYN) prepares frontline youth for hopeful & imaginative leadership in climate adaptation, mitigation, & resilience through hands-on ancestral approaches & STEAM that emphasize stewardship & relationship-building. Currently based in schools across Oakland and San Francisco, MYN is building the capacity of frontline BIPOC youth to grow in their power as climate resilience warriors who are co-creating paths towards a regenerative future rooted in deep cultural connection, place-based solutions, and untethered imaginations. Our work is replicable and scalable because at our core, we center the perspectives of young people who live at the forefront of multiple environmental and social injustice burdens and have the most to gain from transformative climate just actions. From a Next Generation Science Standard aligned curriculum that works with K-12 youth across a range of environmental issues like wildfires, extreme heat, drought, and food scarcity, and supports them in building real-time solutions for their homes and schools, to paid youth opportunities where high school youth build their school out as resilient hubs, to using environmental history and climate data to create Dungeons and Dragons fantasy worlds that youth play through to imagine hopeful futures for this world. Mycelium’s programming remains at the forefront of climate resilient adaptation and mitigation. Nationally, Mycelium will be releasing their inaugural Gaming for Justice compendium book in early 2025. MYN is also slated to be featured in Norcal Public Media's docu-series on climate resilience and climate hope. MYN serves as Environmental Defense Fund's strategic consultant for the launch of their climate curriculum for middle and high school students.

Updates

  • Post-election offerings from MYN's Executive Director, Lil Milagro Henriquez. 💜 "This is the work of many lifetimes. Tending to the practices that move us along the arc of a just transition; divesting from the extractive systems of harm, investing in a regenerative future rooted in reciprocity, care, solidarity. These are practices. We must grow stronger in the relationships that support our collective journey to practice living in accordance with our values.   In times of despair, I lean into my communities who, when faced with what feels like insurmountable odds, find strength in one another to unite even more. We need our communities and networks, more than ever, to continue building together at a hyper-localized level to manifest the world that we want to see not just for our youth but for our plant and animal relatives. I deeply encourage you to connect. Refuse consumption of the false narratives that perpetuate hyper-individualism, scarcity mindset, hopelessness. Build with your community; contribute to your networks. Tend and grow the relationships that inspire you to live into your role as a future ancestor. Listen, and learn from past and present movements for decolonization and liberation. Follow the calls-to-action from frontline organizers who are steadfast in global solidarity work and grassroots movements across identities and borders. Keep showing up in fierce, rageful, and loving solidarity with the people of Palestine, Congo, Sudan, and all Indigenous and frontline peoples of the planet. Build at scale; move in pace with the cycles and seasons of the Earth. Rest.  Hold your loved ones close. Grieve the contradictions that cannot be reconciled. Practice how you resource yourself, and how you return ready to fight in solidarity alongside youth and future generations. Practice rest.  As Mycelium reflects on our role in this moment, we remain committed to building a joyous and liberatory world where youth feel powerful and courageous knowing that they’re never alone in this fight. A world where they feel held in love, where they can greet the dawn with a purpose and hope. We will plan for how we can best share educational, care-centered, and action-oriented resources.   We invite you to resource the Mycelium Movement so that we may continue to plant the seeds of tomorrow. Your contribution supports our work to empower frontline BIPOC youth towards futures rooted in ancestral connection, place-based solutions, & untethered imaginations." • "What if the field of research actually started from the place of people's lives [our communities' lived experiences]? "How do we flip institutional power so we can support our young people in co-creating just solutions for a future where youth have been given the opportunity to [define the terms] of that future?" Shout out to Mycelium Youth Network's Lil Milagro Henriquez, Erica Walker, MSc, ScD of Brown University School of Public Health & Community Noise Lab, RWJF, and all who contributed to this inspiring conversation today on the future of research. Much gratitude for leaving us with the reminder that we all need to practice our "thinking like an ancestor." 💜

Join us on October 21 for a lively conversation between two leaders who are shaping the future of research. Listen in as they share bold ideas for how we can broaden research practices and beliefs to confront structural racism and advance health equity.    Get inspired as they get real about research and take on big questions like:   - What happens when researchers are guided by a community’s needs, instead of their own research agenda?   - What new insights and solutions can researchers unlock when they work side-by-side with young people, neighborhood residents, and others who bring first-hand knowledge and lived experience?

"The growing interest in the intersections of social justice and game design highlights the vital role games play in personal growth, the creation of social bonds, and the development of abilities to understand and navigate our environments. How do games inhabit the world of play while providing knowledge and skills essential to becoming full participants in the stewardship of our communities?” Mycelium Youth Network is tackling these questions through our Gaming for Justice program. We’re recreating real moments from the SF Bay Area‘s history through Dungeons & Dragons adventures where frontline BIPOC youth can see themselves as storytellers and leaders in climate futurisms and create solutions to real world challenges. In these scenarios, youth are empowered to become climate resilience warriors rooted in deep cultural connection, place-based solutions, and untethered imaginations. 💫🌱 You can learn more about MYN’s Gaming for Justice program at the 2024 Women's Environmental Leadership Summit! At the heart of the Data Warriors project led by Mycelium Youth Network is a commitment to research justice and involving young people in the process of knowledge production. We’re not just talking about research; we’re talking about leveling the playing field so that young voices and perspectives are integral to finding solutions to our health and climate challenges. The Data Warriors cohort is doing some amazing work, and I’m inspired by the passion and dedication to incorporate youth voices in efforts to shape a more equitable future. Just concluded a couple of days at the PopTech 2024 conference. PopTech has become one of my go-to favorite conferences (and it's in DC recently!) that brings together a mix of innovative organizations and people across science, technology, global impact, and the arts. It's these types of experiences and engagements that make me appreciate the space at RTI International so much, as it becomes a conduit for connecting to programs, projects, and experts around the world in new ways.   Some of the highest-level highlights include Dmitri Alperovitch's talk which laid out the landscape for a world on the brink, Beatrice Fihn on actually mobilizing civil society at the global level, Shamil Idriss on how the Search for Common Ground can transform how individuals, groups, and governments deal with conflict by moving away from adversarial approaches towards cooperative (and multi-partial!) solutions, and Lil Milagro Henriquez on the work the Mycelium Youth Network is doing to teach STEAM programming paired with climate resilience to low income youth in the Bay Area.   And of course the PEOPLE I met in addition to these folks! Too many to list here, but a particular shout out to inspiring conversations with Natalie Chang at the Center for Disaster Philanthropy, Marcy Brown at the Mycelium Youth Network (and most amazing Game Designer of all time), Ehsan Z. doing amazing things at the Difference Engine housed at ASU, and of course Nick Martin – Founder & CEO of TechChange for introducing me to this space in the first place years ago!

I'm sooooo excited to be heading to DC next week (October 7th - 10th)! DC folks, I will be presenting at the Kennedy Center (!!!) at PopTech's Uncharted Territories (https://lnkd.in/gBV2r9sX) conference! I'll be sharing the main stage with the powerful Dr. Erica Walker, MSc, ScD! We'll be moderated by Lori Melichar, Ph.D as we discuss the future of health equity, research, social justice and radical imagination on Wednesday and then Marcy Brown and I will be running a Gaming for Justice game on Thursday at Poptech. We need more joyful, creative solutions to our climate crisis and climate anxiety. Hit me up to grab coffee and talk about the future of climate education and radical imagination!
