Miami is using smart cameras in dumpsters to optimize waste management, a project led by Compology. The cameras will monitor how full dumpsters are and what types of waste are being discarded. This data aims to improve recycling, reduce carbon emissions, and cut costs by adjusting trash collection schedules. Compology’s CEO, Jason Gates, highlights the inefficiency of current waste systems, which rely on estimates: “It’s all based on estimates.” By automating collection schedules, the city can save money and reduce garbage truck miles. Gates says, “They’re going to be able to cut out tens of thousands of garbage truck miles per year.” The system also helps improve recycling by providing targeted feedback to buildings on their waste habits, reducing contamination by up to 80%.
