In response to our community's growing desire to divert more waste from landfills, we’re excited to introduce our new Hard-to-Recycle Service! This convenient pick-up service helps homes and businesses recycle items not typically collected in curbside programs, such as plastic film, small electronics, styrofoam, and more. As an easy add-on to our food scrap pick-up services, we will manage the collection of the hard-to-recycle items and have partnered with reputable organizations, who ensure the materials are recycled properly. We’re proud of our team for their hard work on this new service and excited to further support our members in their waste diversion efforts! Want to learn more? Visit www.compostnow.org/h2r

That's not all! In his 5 years at CompostNow, Ryan has personally collected 1,778,147 pounds of food waste across 43,880 containers, and has delivered 73,825 pounds of compost! Incredible impact by one person 🎉

In celebration of Waste and Recycling Workers Week, GRC is highlighting our hometown recycling heroes! Meet our hometown compost hero, Ryan Czarnonycz! This August, Ryan will celebrate his five year work anniversary at CompostNow. In that time, he has worked on both the residential sprinter driver team and the commercial box truck driver team, where he also works to train fellow team members. He brings smiles, patience, and meticulous note taking to every one of his stops and is known, and even thanked with gifts of free food, by many of the members he serves. Ryan and his spouse, Rose, have three sons, Liam, Rowan, and Odin. When he’s not working at CompostNow, he is an active homesteader and farmer, tending to his bountiful garden and farm animals including goats, chickens, duck, quail, and a cow. Join us in thanking Ryan for his dedication to protecting Georgia's environment. Leave a thank you message to Ryan in the comments below and don't forget to share so others will learn more about his story! ♻️👏 #WRWWGRC2024 #WasteRecyclingWorkersWeek @compostnow #thankyou

Why are we seeing an increasing demand for municipal compost programs? 👉 Landfill Capacity and Placement – While landfills serve an important civil function, they also require large areas of land and have a finite capacity. According to ReFED, 24 percent (54 million tons) of all food in the United States is wasted and is the number one material we send to landfills. As more land is required to accommodate waste, the pressure on available land increases, potentially leading to deforestation and loss of wildlife habitats. 👉 Environmental Concerns – Landfills are a significant source of greenhouse gas emissions. When organic waste decomposes in landfills it produces methane emissions, which are 25 times more potent than carbon dioxide at trapping heat in the atmosphere. Additionally organic waste contains valuable nutrients that can be used to improve the health of the soil. By diverting food scraps from landfills and turning it into compost, local governments can close the loop on wasted organic nutrients and reduce emissions. 👉 Economic Benefits – Diverting organic waste from landfills can create economic benefits by creating new jobs in the waste management and recycling industries, extending the life of our landfills, and promoting alternative land use in low-income communities (which are disproportionately impacted by landfills and heavy industry). 👉 Regulatory Pressure – In many areas, local governments are increasing regulatory pressure to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfills and increase recycling rates. Diverting organic waste from landfills is one way to achieve these goals. Learn more about municipal compost programs here: https://lnkd.in/gquazmix
