In case you missed it, the First Americans Museum (FAM), designed by client Johnson Fain, is featured in Premier Construction Magazine! ABOUT FIRST AMERICANS MUSEUM (FAM): The concept for the museum, which honors 39 tribes in Oklahoma today, is a spiral that begins in the earth and ascends to the heavens. It is composed of two arcs: the western arc featuring permanent and rotating exhibitions and the northern arc that houses theaters, retail, dining, and other services necessary in modern museums. Advanced Earthquake Engineering Leader at Nabih Youssef & Associates, Founder of Adstran, Founder of Online School of Earthquake Resilient Design
As a result of a highly collaborative effort of Nabih Youssef & Associates (Marios Panagiotou, PhD, PE, Mina Riad, PhD, P.E., Daniel Tunick, Eleanor Siow, PE, Elie Elkhoury, Anthony Giammona, S.E., Jonathan Buckalew, S.E., Sudharshan Navalpakkam, Raghu Gupta, P.E., Michael Gemmill, Andres Rodriguez Burneo), I had the pleasure to present our paper "Nonlinear Response History Analysis of the New UCSF Health Helen Diller Hospital (HHDH): SSI Studies" during the 2024 SEAOC Convention. The $4.3 billion UCSF HHDH at Parnassus Heights will be a state-of-the-art facility serving the Bay area in California. Its seismic resisting system will consist of a special steel moment-resisting frame (SMF) supplemented with nonlinear fluid viscous dampers. The nonlinear response history analysis of this structure incorporated the foundation modeling and a simplified soil-structure interaction (SSI) approach. In this paper we studied the sensitivity of the nonlinear dynamic response to key foundation modeling parameters. These studies are part of our efforts, in collaboration with Jose Restrepo, to incorporate the effects of nonlinear seismic SSI in our performance based seismic design (PBSD) practice. This work is dedicated to the memory of Nabih Youssef, who passed away in July 2024, in recognition of his profound wisdom, exceptional mentorship, and enduring legacy.

UCSF NEW HOSPITAL AT PARNASSUS HEIGHTS The NHPH project consists of a new tower with 15 above-ground stories, one full B1 level basement level, and one partial B2 level basement level. The tower is located on a highly constrained site bounded by Parnassus Avenue to the north, Medical Center Way to the east, a loading dock access road to the south, and existing Moffit and Long hospitals to the West. Additionally, a large network of cantilevers expands the perimeter of the building beyond the perimeter columns. These constraints have produced a structure with unique and impressive geometry. The new tower is adjacent to, but seismically independent from, the existing Moffit and Long hospitals. Flexible connections allow connectivity between the new and existing buildings. The Lateral Force Resisting system of the tower will consist of a Special Steel Moment Resisting Frame using SidePlate™ connections supplemented with fluid viscous dampers. The moment frames and dampers are distributed throughout the plan based on architectural constraints and programming limitations. Nonlinear modeling of the fluid viscous dampers and PBSD is used to validate the structural system, demonstrating the demanding performance needed for a California Hospital. #universityofcalifornia #ucsf #sanfrancisco #losangeles #nabihyoussef #nabihyoussefassociates #structuralengineering #structuralengineer #earthquake #earthquakeengineering #ucsfmedicalcenter #webcore
