    While summer in the Northern Hemisphere may be over, Thornton Tomasetti staff sure made the best of the season while it lasted. Our team members capitalized on the longer daylight hours to have some fun with colleagues, recharge and enjoy the great outdoors. At Thornton Tomasetti, we play as hard as we work, and a healthy rivalry certainly had time to shine bright on the golf course, at the bowling alley and even at the bumper car rink. Others chose to leave the friendly competition to their hometown professional sports teams while they cheered them on from the stands, and more still opted for scenic boat rides complete with refreshments and sunsets. Though the change in temperature calls for a change in itinerary, we have plenty of fall activities planned, too. #summerouting #teambonding

    Act 1, Scene 1. The design team enters, shovels in hand. The curtain has gone up on a new, permanent home for Hudson Valley Shakespeare. Ground was broken this week on the 14,850-square-foot Samuel H. Scripps Theater Center in Garrison, New York. Supported on timber columns, the curved, timber-framed grid shell structure will be the focal point of the 98-acre arts complex. The open-air performance space will bring the company’s actors, audiences and back-of-house operations under one roof and provide greater flexibility. Thornton Tomasetti is providing structural engineering services for the project (https://lnkd.in/e8f4DUp3) designed by Studio Gang architects. The theater, which is targeting LEED Platinum certification, is expected to make its debut in spring 2026. #structuralengineering #theater

    The modernization of one of the nation’s oldest collegiate football stadiums is at the half-way line. A topping out ceremony was held last week for phase 1 of the renovation of The University of Kansas’ David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium in Lawrence. Thornton Tomasetti’s Construction Engineering team, which provided connection design and Tekla modeling to Turner Construction Company and erection engineering services to Doherty Steel, Inc., was on hand for the festivities. Part of the university’s Gateway District development, the stadium renovation is designed to enhance the fan experience and will include new premium seating and additional concession areas. The initial phase, which focuses on the southwest, west and north sides of the stadium, is expected to be completed by the Jayhawks’ 2025 football season. Seating capacity will be determined by future work; however, it is anticipated to accommodate more than 40,000 fans. #constructionengineering

    Northeastern University has broken ground on a permanent campus in Portland, Maine, that will house The Roux Institute at Northeastern University and Alfond Center. The waterfront development will transform the former B&M Baked Beans industrial site into a state-of-the-art, multi-building complex that will serve as a hub for research and education in artificial intelligence (AI), computer and data sciences, life sciences and other high-tech fields. Thornton Tomasetti is providing structural design, sustainability and resilience services to CambridgeSeven for phase one of the project, which consists of the six-story, 245,000-square-foot Roux Institute academic building and a 610-car parking garage. Inspired in part by Maine’s historic Bailey Island Bridge, the Roux Institute's unique design features a curved and cantilevered structure, inclined facades, a sloped roof and terraces, all supported by two major concrete cores and exposed V columns. Among the building materials being used are glass, granite, brick, copper and wood, including a mass timber west wing, to reflect the site’s industrial heritage. The campus will be 30% more energy-efficient than required by Portland’s energy code, with sustainable features like geothermal heating and cooling systems and low-carbon materials. Our climate risk assessment addressed threats such as flooding, seismic activity, high winds and extreme weather. The result is an all-electric campus designed to maintain operational functionality through the 2100s. Expected to be completed in late 2027, the campus will restore the shoreline and provide public access to the waterfront through bike and pedestrian trails. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/eFrdegtR

    From the day the planes hit the Twin Towers on September 11, 2001, engineers played a crucial role at Ground Zero. Working as “second responders,” engineers supported police, firefighters and other volunteers with the search and rescue effort, assessing the stability of structures and buildings. Many remained at the site for months to help with the cleanup and keep people safe. The documentary “Engineers at Ground Zero,” previewed by TIME Magazine today and scheduled for a full release in November, follows the stories of some of the Structural Engineers Association of New York members involved in the rescue and recovery. Among them are Thornton Tomasetti Managing Principal & Applied Science Practice Co-Leader Najib Abboud, Founding Principal Richard Tomasetti and Managing Principal James W. Feuerborn Jr. Combining oral history with footage from the site, the film follows the rescue and recovery through to the investigation into how and why the towers fell and the important lessons learned about building design and safety. #September11 #neverforget
