There are many challenges facing the business of higher education in 2025, but some of them can be addressed if we simply join together to amplify our voices. Today, NACUBO board members and staff took our voices to Capitol Hill, engaging with policymakers on numerous legislative proposals that will shape the future of students and institutions alike. We didn’t just speak—we listened, we learned, and most importantly, we took action. #HigherEducation

NACUBO President and CEO Kara Freeman, CAE’s Statement on the Department of Education Executive Order: "Today’s executive order by the White House to largely dismantle the U.S. Department of Education only adds to the turbulence colleges and universities are experiencing and the uncertainty students and families are facing at this critical time in the academic year. We remain deeply concerned about key elements of the department’s portfolio, such as the processing of federal student aid, aid to institutions, and the tracking of data that is so important to institutional decision-making. Most troubling is that these collective actions involving the department could cause enough confusion to discourage students and families from considering a path to college." https://lnkd.in/e7_88aAi #HigherEducation

Statement by NACUBO President and CEO Kara Freeman, CAE on widespread layoffs at the Department of Education: “The news of massive layoffs at the U.S. Department of Education sows more chaos and uncertainty. Colleges and universities are left with more questions than answers: Who will process the millions of student aid applications for the coming academic year? How will the institutional aid that is so critical to Historically Black Colleges and Universities, Tribal Colleges and Universities, and other Minority Serving Institutions be managed? Who will provide assistance to those institutions handling compliance issues or the data that is so critical to institutional decision-making? The inability to answer any of these questions will cause unprecedented uncertainty for institutional planning, and the chaos will cause immense confusion for students and families, discouraging them from considering a path to college or applying for readily available aid. More than 1,000 public servants at this agency will soon be out of work. This decision is extremely short-sighted and will undoubtedly lead to unintended consequences.” https://lnkd.in/efhRyvKb #HigherEducation #HigherEd #StudentSuccess
