The 2024 Nation’s Report Card (#NAEP) will be released in early 2025, instead of fall 2024, to allow time for the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) to study if there are any impacts from changing assessment devices. States and TUDA districts were informed of these changes in April 2023. “One of the core purposes of education, both public and private, is to prepare students for civic life and to be effective citizens in our democracy. When students are unaware of our history and don’t have a solid grasp of our fundamental political institutions, they’re less prepared for civic life. There’s broad consensus that American democracy is experiencing significant challenges, and it is hard to envision us overcoming those challenges unless citizens understand our political institutions and learn how to engage as participants in our civic life.” - Harvard Graduate School of Education Professor and National Assessment Governing Board Member, Marty West

Executive Director @ National Assessment Governing Board. Public servant, education advocate, parent.
While my kids headed to their first day of school at District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS) this morning, many schools across the country started school a week or more ago — and already an unknown number of students have been absent from school. Excused or unexcused, any and all absences impact student learning. On #NAEP, we've seen an association between steep drops in achievement among 4th and 8th graders and how often those same students reported they missed school. Here's the data: https://lnkd.in/eTDNFiTX Tackling this issue is hard and complex. It requires data, support for school leaders, and more research about the most effective ways to ensure students come to school — and keep coming. At the end of the day, no matter what Herculean efforts are in place to improve math instruction, improve teacher supports, and improve access to opportunities and resources; if kids are not in school, they are not learning. Period.
Overdeck Family Foundation is thrilled to announce $1 million in grants to support five studies designed to produce data and research that collectively inform the work of policymakers and practitioners in the hope of increasing student attendance from Pre-K to high school. Nationally, an estimated 26 percent of U.S. public school students were considered chronically absent during SY 2022-23. To address this crisis, educators and administrators must have access to high-quality evidence on the root causes of and solutions to chronic absenteeism post-pandemic. cc: Ad Council, Attendance Works, David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, Texas Tech University, The Los Angeles Trust for Children's Health, UNC School of Education, Behavioral Insights and Parenting Lab | The University of Chicago, University of Chicago Consortium on School Research, University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education

What should researchers be looking into when it comes to #ChronicAbsenteeism? We have a whole wish list... 1. Where across the nation are the highest levels of reported absences? By region? By state? 2. Which student subgroups report the most frequent absences? 3. Some states created policies to boost attendance. Have attendance patterns changed since policy enactment? 4. How do student absenteeism and teacher absenteeism relate to each other? 5. How much variation in attendance is there at the school, district, and state levels? More questions here: https://lnkd.in/gaq7wbb3 Tag someone if you think they might have some answers using recent data…

Many districts and schools are back in session. How many students have already missed days of school? It's important to use data every day to understand who is missing school and how to take action to get kids into classrooms. We are committed to exploring what #AI can mean for the Nation’s Report Card. In addition to gathering experts at our most recent board meeting, we have also formed the Ad Hoc Committee on Generative Artificial Intelligence to examine important questions such as: ➡ How can AI positively impact the #NAEP assessment and student test-taking experience? ➡ Who is being left out when it comes to AI? ➡ Where is bias in AI and how can we eliminate it? Special thank you to our committee members who will be working to define the Board’s AI agenda and engage their fellow Board Members about advancements in AI and the potential opportunities and impacts for NAEP. Last week we had the honor of hearing from current and former Massachusetts education leaders about the history of the Commonwealth’s education policies to improve student outcomes, the current landscape, and new goals for the future. Panelists emphasized the importance of ensuring ALL students have opportunities to learn, holding students to high standards, and using the data from assessments to inform practice. As Gov. Healy put it during her keynote: “You cannot fix what you cannot measure.” Special thank you to Gov. Maura Healy, Paul Reville , Jim Peyser, Patrick Tutwiler, PhD, David Driscoll, and Mary Benson Skipper for taking time to contribute to this important and enlightening discussion!
