We had to share this! Take a peek at Amazon Prime’s Air Hub and the AT Injury Prevention Specialists. Great pictures.
Emerging settings site visits! At KSBD-Amazon Prime Air Hub, COPA Chair Kelly met with one of the Injury Prevention Specialists, Bill Ito. She also had the opportunity to have NATA Hall of Famer, Andy Paulin, to tag along (her former colleagues from when she worked at Mt. San Antonio College). “This facility is amazing. It truly is a testament to the ol' saying that ‘everyday in athletic training is different.’ We started the tour by going through security to get our complimentary PPE, followed by being screened by TSA. We then headed out to the tarmac where Bill showed us the cooling stations available, within about a minute of each other along the tarmac amidst the planes. There were also Kestrel WBGT meters across the entire tarmac that could be tracked to help indicate when water breaks may be needed or increased. Once inside, we saw Bill's station that not only included an area that employees could go to be seen, but to be prescribed and work on preventative exercises, as well as use tools for soft tissue work to prevent and treat overuse injuries. Their safety team also included a ”health center’ that included EMTs on staff. The documentation process for each seemed very similar to that of a traditional setting working with secondary insurance through a physician's office. He also showed us the equipment available to each employee to help keep them visible, cool, and hydrated (insulated camelbak). One of the craziest things to see was the 'caster deck,' (photo with a bunch of wheels on the ground). Instead of raising the giant containers that then go onto the plane, they made a whole floor made out of wheels to slide the containers across, however as you can imagine, walking across this and controlling a 4,000 pound container can pose a bit of a challenge. Part of Bill's role is to develop ways to reduce the risk of injuries. He shared a few projects he has worked on and how they've resulted in a reduction in injuries and costs. Hear more from Bill during our panel at the 2025 CATA symposium!
