"Brutalism, the minimalist architectural style that takes its name from béton brut (French for 'raw concrete'), might as well describe the violent reaction it inspires in some people," writes Michael O'Sullivan in The Washington Post. "That’s especially true in Washington D.C., where the style is widespread — and widely despised. A 2023 analysis by the British building materials company Buildworld, for example, claims the FBI headquarters is the ugliest building in the country, and the second ugliest in the world." The National Building Museum has launched "Future Cities", an ambitious, three year program to explore the potential solutions to housing affordability, commercial vacancy, safety, and vibrancy. Watch out for upcoming programs which will look at how our cities have evolved and will continue to evolve through economic and social transitions. Rooted Communities is proud to sponsor these programs alongside AARP and work closely with adjunct curators Andrew Trueblood and Uwe S. Brandes. #futurecitiesNBM #adaptivereuse #downtown #vibrancy
Earlier this month Aileen Fuchs invited design leaders to engage in conversation at a “Livability & Design”- themed lunch as part of our #FutureCitiesNBM Initiative. Downtowns across America are challenged by commercial vacancies, housing shortages, public safety issues and more. How are we reinventing cities to meet these challenges? We addressed this question and many more and (spoiler alert for “Coming Together” - our upcoming exhibition on the topic of Downtowns) we found opportunities for OPTIMISM. What are you feeling about the future of our cities?

"According to the exhibition, many Brutalist buildings “face widespread public aversion” and are dubbed as “ugly” structures globally. However, there is simultaneously a growing recognition of their cultural value, sparking preservation efforts. In fact, the exhibition explores the options these structures are left with, be it renovation or demolition, and the challenges accompanying these decisions." Brutalism enthusiasts and critics alike should visit our latest exhibition, Capital Brutalism! Learn more about it in this article from Arch Daily.
