About us
Expanding horizons in meteorology and weather forecasting, water cycle hydrology, oceanography, solar physics, atmospheric chemistry and air quality, climate science, computer science, environmental science, and STEM education. We provide research, observing and computing facilities, and services for the atmospheric and Earth system science community. With UCAR, we promote partnership in a collaborative community of university and laboratory researchers dedicated to understanding the atmosphere and the interconnected processes that make up the Earth system, from the ocean floor to the Sun's core. NSF NCAR is sponsored by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and managed by the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR).

NSF NCAR - The National Center for Atmospheric Research reposted this
The NSF NCAR Earth Observing Laboratory is actively testing components of the proposed Lower Troposphere Observing System (LOTOS) at NCAR’s Marshall Field site. LOTOS aims to integrate instruments like radars, lidars, wind profilers, ASSIST IR spectrometer, flux towers, and surface energy budget and trace gas sensors into a cohesive, deployable measurement platform for the scientific community. The Marshall tests are crucial for advancing sensor development and refining the algorithms needed to synchronize data from these diverse instruments. Upper photos show the ISFS and MPD lidar, lower photos show ISS requestable facilities. #NCAREOL #NCAR_Science #NSF #LOTOS

After taking near-daily measurements of the Sun’s global coronal magnetic field (say that three times fast), scientists have a brighter picture of this elusive region and the processes that drive solar storms. ☀️ Solar storms can interfere with vital Earth-bound technology, so better understanding the Sun can help life on our planet. NSF NCAR High Altitude Observatory (HAO) scientists and their research team used a combination of coronal seismology and Upgraded Coronal Multi-channel Polarimeter (UCoMP) observations to produce consistent and comprehensive views of the magnetic field of the Sun, similar to what is seen during an eclipse. #GradStudent Opportunity! 📢 The NSF NCAR Advanced Study Program (ASP) is now accepting applications from graduate students for the 2025 Graduate Visitor Program. The ASP Graduate Visitor Program (GVP) is an excellent way for graduate students to connect with NSF NCAR scientists and engineers to receive guidance on their thesis or final project equivalent, along with professional development opportunities. Please note, a nomination from an NSF NCAR scientist as sponsor/host is required along with the graduate student application to be considered. The graduate student application deadline for the GVP is November 1, 2024. The host nomination deadline for NSF NCAR scientists and engineers is November 6, 2024.
