What an incredible evening at the DC Charter School Alliance Gala this past Friday! 🌟 It was a gathering of the finest in the charter school community, and the atmosphere was electrifying with the spirit of camaraderie and shared purpose. One of the most poignant moments of the night was reflecting on the remarkable legacy of the late Dr. Ramona Edelin, an advocate for charter schools. Her unwavering dedication continues to inspire us all. 🕊️ The evening was filled with joyous reunions and heartfelt congratulations. I was thrilled to catch up with Daniela Anello, the dynamic Head of School at DC Bilingual Public Charter School. It was a pleasure to congratulate her in person for the school's outstanding achievement of receiving the US Department of Education National Blue Ribbon School Award. 🏫🎉 Engaging with Tamika Joyner, Director of Strategic Partnerships from Rocketship Public Schools DC is always a pleasure. Her expertise is truly invaluable. A huge congrats to Jessica Sutter on her new role as Executive Director at Earth Conservation Corps. Jessica’s commitment to making a difference is inspiring. It was also a time of celebration for my favorite people, like RaShaun Kemp, who is embarking on a new journey towards Senator-Elect for Georgia State Senate District 38 and currently Senior Director -Advocacy and Stakeholder for National Charter Collaborative. We’re all rooting for you, Rashaun! 🌟Reconnecting with Rachelle Y. Roberts from the DC Council, Ward Five- Chief of Staff for Zachary Parker brought back so many great memories. Her energy is contagious, and her dedication to Ward Five is unmatched. A special thank you to Dr. Antoinette Mitchell, Interim State Superintendent of Education, and Phil Mendelson, Chairman of the Council of the District of Columbia, for their continued support and acknowledgment of AppleTree Schools achievements. Their congratulations messages for our open house and Best DC Preschool award from Washington Parent Magazine means the world to us. Patricia Brantley’s advocacy for the charter school community doesn’t go unnoticed. She was awarded for her tireless efforts in advocating for children at the gala. And of course, the evening wouldn’t have been the same without the lively LaJoy Johnson-Law, MPA, M. Phil, whose contributions to the community through her work with PAVE and beyond are truly outstanding and she is a former parent board member of AppleTree Schools. Last but not least, congratulating Dr. Jestine Mayberry, Ed.D. on her new role as Chief Academic Officer at Mary McLeod Bethune Day Academy PCS was a highlight of my night. It was an evening of in-depth conversations, and every moment was a testament to the vibrant, dedicated community that is shaping the future of charter schools in DC. Here’s to continuing to make a difference together! 🎉 #DCCarterAllianceGala #CharterSchools #Education #CommunityImpact

  • 📊 Representation matters, especially in education. When students see leaders who look like them, it creates a more inclusive and inspiring learning environment! 🌟 Research shows that schools with diverse leadership achieve better student outcomes, adopt more inclusive policies, and develop a deeper understanding of cultural nuances. At National Charter Collaborative, we’re dedicated to amplifying the voices of leaders of color in charter schools, working to bridge the gap for underrepresented students and build a diverse community of educators. We believe that every student deserves to see themselves in their leaders, and through programs like our Manati Fellowship and peer-to-peer online community, we’re building a pipeline of leaders ready to make an impact. 💪🏽✨ Let’s work together to close the gap and create a more equitable education system. • Being a leader is not just about a title—it's about embodying values that make a real and lasting impact. 🌟 The qualities of a true leader, like integrity, empathy, resilience, adaptability, accountability, and confidence, are the foundation for building strong teams and impactful communities. When leaders cultivate these traits, they don’t just succeed in their roles; they inspire others to do the same. At NCC, we believe that empowering leaders of color in charter schools is essential for the future of education. Through our Manati Fellowship, we foster these qualities in leaders, providing them with the tools, mentorship, and support to uplift their communities and challenge the status quo. 🏫✨ What other qualities do you believe are essential for leadership that truly drives change? Let’s continue this conversation. Your perspective matters! 💬👇🏽

  • 🎙️ In her recent feature on the "Teach the Babies" podcast with Dr. David Johns, our CEO Naomi N. Shelton tackled some of the most pressing issues facing Black and brown students in today’s educational landscape. More than just a call for accountability, Naomi stressed the need for school districts to reimagine how they are funding and resourcesto make real, lasting change. 📚 As she points out, it's not just about restoring what we had before the pandemic—it’s about leveraging every opportunity to push for better outcomes. Whether it’s addressing literacy gaps or ensuring academic and emotional support, we urge our community to be vigilant in advocating for what our students need. 🖋️ We need our elected officials, school boards, and communities to step up and be held accountable for creating equitable, safe spaces for all children. And with alarming movements like book bans and the erasure of marginalized voices, this fight is more important than ever. Check out the full episode and get inspired to take action for our students! Together, we can make a difference. 🎧✨ Listen here: https://lnkd.in/g4_k9FCf

Co-Launched and Lead the Center for Inclusive Innovation at Digital Promise

I am thrilled to see how Naomi N. Shelton has transformed National Charter Collaborative -- the startup organization that Trish Millines Dziko and I launched as our Pahara Institute project! We had the pleasure of connecting a few weeks ago, and it was pure joy hearing about the work to support leaders of color. The website says it all -- Your Network, Your Community -- Helping Leaders Build the Best Schools Reflective of the Communities They Serve. THIS IS WHY WE DO THE WORK!

Chief Executive Officer at National Charter Collaborative

When I look back at my career, I see a path that has been deeply shaped by a commitment to public service, education, and a passion for advocacy. My journey to leading the National Charter Collaborative (NCC) wasn’t just about advancing in my career—it was about fulfilling a purpose that has driven me from the start: ensuring that Black and Brown students have access to quality education and that the leaders who serve them are supported and empowered. My experience in the education sector began long before I joined NCC. I’ve always believed in the transformative power of education, and that belief was only strengthened during my time at the UNCF (United Negro College Fund). One of the most pivotal moments in my career was my experience as an authorizer on the DC Public Charter School Board. It was a role that profoundly influenced why I do the work I do today. As an authorizer, I had to make tough decisions, including voting on whether to close schools. What struck me deeply was that many of the schools proposed for closure were led by people of color. It was this realization that led me to the National Charter Collaborative. I wanted to be part of an organization that not only recognized the value of single-site charter schools led by leaders of color but also provided the support and resources necessary to ensure their longevity and impact. At NCC, we focus on three key areas: bringing new leaders into the fold, strengthening the capabilities of current leaders, and sustaining their success. When I look at the work we’re doing at NCC, I see a continuation of the advocacy journey I started years ago, but on a larger scale. We’re not just amplifying the voices of charter leaders of color—we’re ensuring that their stories, their successes, and their innovations are recognized and celebrated. What keeps me going is the knowledge that we are not just supporting schools and their leaders—we are shaping the future for countless students. I’m proud to lead this organization, and I’m excited about the impact we will continue to make together.
