NCARB is excited to share the new Competency Standard for Architects! Developed with input from thousands of practicing architects, the new Competency Standard defines the level of knowledge, skill, and ability necessary to demonstrate competency as an architect. Over the next two years, NCARB will update the AXP and ARE to align them with the competencies defined in the Competency Standard. However, the updates won’t affect the current AXP experience areas or ARE divisions, and all candidates will retain full credit for all existing AXP and ARE progress. In addition to informing changes to the existing AXP and ARE, the NCARB Competency Standard will be the foundation of future licensure programs. Congratulations to Jacori & teammates on receiving the People's Choice Award for the 2024 AIA Northern Virginia Interschool Student Design Competition! 👏 It's always an honor to see students come together to create design solutions that could serve the local DC community.
On October 4th, the 2024 Interschool Design Competition winners were announced. My Team (Elizabeth Robele, Irfàn Rabbat, Jade Harris, Nahida Sultana, and Ann-nelly Cotin), Team 8: "The Architecture of Disturbance" took home three awards: 2nd Place, the People's Choice Award, and the Faculty Award. This achievement was a first in ISDC history! The design challenge was to enhance the cultural relevancy and architectural vernacular of the historic Wah Luck House located on DC's Chinatown H st. corridor. In our solution, we prioritized modularity, aesthetics, sustainability, & urban rhythm to provide spaces for revolving vendors, marketplace, and reflection. For my team, we needed to propose a design that welded together passive circulation and permanent installation. Now, I'd like to extend a huge thank you to the sponsor, the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB) (Jared Zurn), and the organizers from three of Washington, D.C. AIA area chapters - AIA|DC + WAF, AIA Potomac Valley, and AIA Northern Virginia for providing opportunities for young professionals like myself to sharpen our skillsets outside our studio spaces. Also, I'd like to give a special thanks to my National Building Museum family for granting us the space for this competition to take place AND for the continuous support of my professional and academic endeavors! And finally, to my team. I am so proud of all that we accomplished in such a limited time. It was a cherished experience to collaborate with such inspiring, innovative, and passionate minds. My only hope is that this competition marks just the beginning of our success stories! GO TEAM!!! Until next year ISDC!

We recently caught up with some members of 📍the nycoba | NOMA (NY Coalition of Black Architects|National Organization of Minority Architects - NY) chapter, an organization working to ensure that all licensure candidates have access to the opportunities they need to complete the AXP and advance their career. By developing an innovative OnSite program, candidates have regular access to Construction & Evaluation experience—an area that many candidates have difficulty with—through supervised site visits.
