Today NFTC released first-of-its-kind polling conducted by Morning Consult that finds American voters overwhelmingly want stronger U.S. global leadership on trade, technology and AI. (Key findings are below.) This polling suggests that there is an opportunity for candidates to articulate a positive vision for U.S. global technology leadership -- and offer a plan to stand up for America’s businesses and workers abroad while developing closer trade and technology ties with our allies. Among the key findings: ✔ 86% of American voters believe it is important for the United States to have a leadership role in writing the global rules for technology. ✔ 82% of voters are concerned that foreign regulators are discriminating against U.S. businesses to protect their markets from American competitors. ✔ 74% of voters indicate that foreign regulators, like from the European Union, should not target U.S. companies while creating advantages for their own domestic competitors. ✔ 83% of voters agree that it is important for the United States to develop a digital trade agenda that helps American small businesses and workers effectively compete in overseas markets. ✔ Americans worry that the United States is ceding global leadership to others. 83% of Republicans and 76% of Democrats think that the United States has taken a significant step back in its global leadership, and 79% of Americans think that this lack of leadership benefits China. ✔ When it comes to broader U.S. international engagement, 85% think it is important for the United States to have a leadership role in writing the global rules for trade. Two-in-three (66%) voters view economic engagement with other countries as good because it creates new markets and growth rather than view economic engagement as bad because it lowers wages and costs jobs (35%).
