A team of NIH-funded found that in a family with an inherited form of Alzheimer’s disease, those who carried a gene variant called APOE3Ch had a delay in cognitive impairment and dementia. More research is needed to see whether APOE3Ch has a protective effect in people beyond this family and to understand how it exerts its protective effect. NIA-funded research found that an antibody treatment given to older mice before pathogen exposure improved cell function and increased the immune systems of older mice, safeguarding them from microbes that would normally be lethal. The antibody was developed against a protein called programmed cell death 1 (PD1). Learn more about the research study and how it could potentially lead to human therapies that enhance immune function in older adults: https://lnkd.in/dp865ZxR #NIAFunded #NIHAging #Antibodies #PD1 #ImmuneFunction

NIH is taking steps to re-envision the postdoctoral training experience, but the feedback of the biomedical research community is a crucial part of this process. Among the actions under consideration are: ➡️Limiting the amount of time a postdoctoral scholar can be supported by NIH funds to five years to speed transition into research careers. ➡️ Shorten the eligibility window and refocus review criteria for a key mentored career development award (K99/R00) to facilitate more rapid transition of postdoctoral scholars. ➡️Enhancing training and professional development for postdoctoral scholars and their mentors. Share your feedback by October 23, 2024: https://go.nih.gov/amqQ7DD

NIA-funded research suggests that adolescent cognitive ability is associated with later-life dementia and cognitive impairment risk. In this study, researchers analyzed data from the Project Talent Aging Study, a national longitudinal study of 377,015 students in high school launched in 1960. These findings underscore the influence of early life factors on long-term cognitive health. A NIA-funded study found that having clinicians automatically order palliative care increased consultation rates and expedited consultations for seriously ill hospitalized older adults. Learn more the study and how its results may suggest that default palliative care could be a valuable tool for health systems to enhance the delivery of guideline-recommended clinical consultations: https://lnkd.in/e2u2SuNq #NIAFunded #NIHAging #PalliativeCare #EndOfLife

The roots of NIA’s Intramural Research Program (IRP) trace back to the pioneering work of Dr. Nathan Shock and the launch of the Baltimore Longitudinal Study on Aging in 1958. It has evolved into a robust and broad aging research program, with the Baltimore Longitudinal Study being the nation’s longest-running longitudinal study of human aging.
