Why does permitting reform matter? As the The Wall Street Journal writes, just last week China gave us a significant reminder by restricting exports of antimony. We could be sourcing US antimony at home from responsible sources like Perpetua Resources’ Stibnite project. But, remarkably, the company began the permitting process in 2016 in is still navigating the wildly complex process of obtaining the 50+ federal, state and local permits it needs to begin operations. Minerals demands are soaring and, right along with them, US import dependence continues to climb. We need more US projects like the NewRange Copper Nickel North Met Project, which today announced new research underway to identify technologies and sustainability developments that could further enhance the project's existing excellent environmental safeguards and overall performance.
We’re entering a new phase of work in the development of our NorthMet Project, embarking on key studies in four areas over the next year: tailings storage, water science, production capacity, and carbon reduction. We aim to assess whether new mining technology and sustainability developments can further enhance the project’s environmental safeguards and mining performance. In other words, we’re looking to see if we can make a very good project better. Our news release explains more: https://bit.ly/4clYTml Current plans already meet permitting requirements. Proposed changes may be subject to supplemental environmental review and permitting. Regardless of study outcomes, we’re committed to moving forward as an engaged community partner with a project that meets environmental performance standards and sustainable mine design standards that clean up and preserve our rivers and lakes and safeguard water quality for generations to come.

Rich Nolan, President of the National Mining Association, recently sat down with Better In Our Back Yard's Ryan Sistad to discuss their crucial work in advocating for improved coordination within the federal government on mining initiatives, reminiscent of the U.S. Bureau of Mines. It's well-known within the mining industry that there is a significant disparity between the U.S. and allies like Canada and Australia, which have dedicated entities or individuals within their governments to coordinate policy and advocate for the mining sector. This coordination has led to more efficient permitting timelines in those countries compared to the U.S. "We are at the most intensive minerals era since World War II right now and what we're trying to do is to bring some focus and transparency & accountability into the opportunities that are out there for financing, coordination, permitting across these federal agencies to really get this right." Rich Nolan - President of the National Mining Association The U.S. urgently needs a centralized advocate for mining. The current lack of coordination has compelled the NMA, along with other associations such as the American Exploration & Mining Association and the Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration Inc. (SME), to push for more synchronized efforts among various agencies.
