Despite what you might hear from anti-mining groups, the Flambeau Mine out of Ladysmith, Wisconsin was a success and is a great example of responsible industry. The Flambeau Mine was a Copper mine and it was located along the shores of the Flambeau River and operated from 1993 to 1997 and finished reclamation by 1999. Flambeau was the first mine to earn permits and operate under Wisconsin’s stringent mining laws. The WDNR holds Flambeau as an example of a successful operation and successful closure. The reclaimed site is now home to acres of wetlands, hundreds of species of plants and animals, miles of hiking trails, and five miles of equestrian trails open to the public year-round. Exciting news yesterday! General Motors announced a joint venture with Lithium Americas Corp., committing $625 million in cash and credit to the DOE-backed Thacker Pass project in northwest Nevada. This partnership will focus on the development, construction, and operation of the Thacker Pass lithium carbonate mine in Humboldt County, Nevada. Lithium, a crucial component for electric vehicle batteries, is vital to GM’s strategy to expand its all-electric vehicle business and meet stricter federal requirements for EV production and incentives. GM will hold a 38% stake in Thacker Pass. The investment includes $330 million in cash at closing, $100 million upon a “final investment decision” for a phase of the project, and a $195 million letter of credit before the first draw on the $2.3 billion Department of Energy loan awarded to Thacker earlier this year. The original U.S. Bureau of Mines was founded on July 1, 1910, under the Department of the Interior, with the primary mission of ensuring the nation had sufficient nonfuel mineral resources to meet national security and other critical needs. The Bureau’s work focused on research into the extraction, processing, utilization, and recycling of nonfuel minerals, all while minimizing environmental impact and safeguarding workers. However, in 1996, due to budget cuts, the USBM was shut down, drawing significant criticism from those who argued that the U.S. was undermining vital scientific research and investment. Now, nearly three decades later, Senators John Hickenlooper of Colorado and Thom Tillis of North Carolina have introduced the bipartisan National Critical Minerals Council Act. This proposed legislation, serving a similar role to the U.S. Bureau of Mines, seeks to establish a National Critical Minerals Council, chaired by the Vice President. The Council would be tasked with developing a comprehensive strategy to reduce U.S. reliance on foreign adversaries for critical minerals. A Chief Minerals Advisor, appointed by the President, would oversee the Council’s work, collaborating with experts to address vulnerabilities in the U.S. mineral supply chain. Key responsibilities include drafting a national strategy to reduce supply chain risks, fostering partnerships with allied nations and private companies on critical mineral projects, monitoring foreign investments—particularly from China—and creating specific strategies to secure five priority critical minerals. A recent survey by the Tucson Metro Chamber reveals that 72 percent of Arizonans support copper mining in the Copper State, highlighting widespread recognition of copper’s vital role in modern life. As a key component in renewable energy technologies, electric vehicles, and everyday electronics, copper is integral to the transition toward a more sustainable future. Accounting for 74 percent of the nations' copper, Arizona holds a strategic position in ensuring domestic copper production, which is crucial for reducing dependence on foreign imports. This not only bolsters economic security but also strengthens the nation’s supply chain resilience, particularly in industries that are critical to U.S. infrastructure and national security. Resolution Copper, one of the most significant undeveloped copper projects in the country, has the potential to be a major contributor to meeting rising U.S. copper demand. Once operational, it could supply an astounding 25 percent of the country’s copper needs, making a substantial impact on domestic production. By tapping into Arizona’s rich copper reserves, Resolution Copper will help the U.S. achieve greater self-sufficiency in this essential metal, supporting the growth of emerging technologies and furthering national goals in clean energy, transportation, and defense innovation. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) must recognize the growing importance of silver and add it to the critical minerals list. Silver’s strategic role in national security, clean energy, and job creation make this an essential step to support domestic mining and strengthen the U.S. economy. Here are 5 reasons why Silver should be added as a critical mineral: ✅ National Security and Supply Chain Resilience: Silver plays a critical role in military technologies, including advanced communication systems and weaponry. With rising geopolitical tensions, relying on foreign imports for such an essential material poses a significant risk to national security. Adding silver to the critical minerals list would encourage domestic production, securing a reliable supply for defense needs. ✅ Essential for Clean Energy Technologies: Silver is a key component in solar panels, making it indispensable to the U.S. clean energy transition. As the nation ramps up efforts to achieve net-zero emissions and combat climate change, ensuring a stable domestic supply of silver is vital for scaling up solar power infrastructure and supporting the green energy economy. ✅ Pro-Jobs, Pro-Growth: Expanding domestic silver mining would create high-quality, good-paying jobs in rural and mining communities. By adding silver to the critical minerals list, we can support U.S. miners and encourage investment in American-made resources, boosting local economies and creating long-term employment opportunities in an industry vital to the future. ✅ Reducing Dependence on Foreign Sources: Currently, the U.S. imports the majority of its silver, primarily from countries with unstable supply chains. Increasing domestic production would reduce our dependence on foreign nations, fostering greater independence and ensuring that American industries have the resources they need without being subject to foreign political instability or trade restrictions. ✅ A Hedge Against Inflation and Economic Stability: Historically, silver has been a reliable store of value and a hedge against inflation. In times of economic uncertainty, silver’s intrinsic value helps protect against fluctuations in currency markets and rising costs. Adding silver to the critical minerals list would reinforce its role in securing economic stability, providing both industry and the U.S. government with a valuable asset in times of economic volatility. By adding silver to the critical minerals list, we can create more jobs, enhance national security, and accelerate the clean energy transition—all while reducing reliance on foreign imports. Let’s strengthen our domestic mining sector and safeguard the future of American innovation. Did you know that Hecla Mining Company is America's largest producer of Silver?
