CONGRATS - We’re thrilled to share the 205 local newsrooms that are receiving a combined $20 million today from #PressForward! From newsrooms focused on people of color and linguistically diverse communities to others covering vast rural areas where they are the only news source for miles - these local journalists are filling the gaps where traditional coverage has fallen short. We were so thrilled by the extraordinary proposals—more than 900—that we doubled our initial plan and are supporting twice as many local newsrooms as expected. Americans are stepping up to write a new story for local news. 📰 Join us in supporting local newsrooms across the country: Donate to Press Forward's Pooled Fund today, and every dollar up to $5 million will be matched to support local newsrooms across the U.S. Learn more at pressforward.news/grantees.

A national coalition strengthening communities by reinvigorating local news
About us
Press Forward is a historic initiative to strengthen democracy in the United States by revitalizing local news and information. The steady and significant decline in the availability of reliable, fact-based local news across the country is connected to growing threats to democracy, increasing polarization, and the spread of disinformation. At the same time, over a decade of investment in journalism experimentation and transformation have produced new models and solutions that are ready to scale, and a new generation of leaders prepared to reinvent and revitalize the field. It’s time to move from individual grantmaking strategies to a shared vision and coordinated action. Press Forward is a national coalition investing more than $500 million to strengthen local newsrooms, close longstanding gaps in journalism coverage, advance public policy that expands access to local news, and to scale the infrastructure the sector needs to thrive. The State of Local News 2024 report is out from Northwestern University Medill School. Sara Fischer of Axios has the highlights.
🚨 Most U.S. counties now have little to no local news sources — The number of counties at high risk of losing all local news jumped 22% this year — While there's been an uptick in digital news sites, the vast majority serve metro areas, not rural news deserts More on Axios:

Thank you Maribel Perez Wadsworth & Knight Foundation for your support for local news, and for helping our local chapters grow! #PressForward
As I reflect on this year as President & CEO of Knight Foundation, what I said in February — that philanthropy must move at the speed of news — has never been more relevant. A major focus for Knight this year has been Press Forward, the collaborative effort we helped launch to enhance the growth, expansion, and sustainability of local news organizations across the country. With Press Forward, we doubled our journalism commitment from $150 million to $300 million over five years. However, recognizing the urgent need, we accelerated this effort committing nearly all of that new funding in the first year. This decision gives us the flexibility to assess the performance of those investments and address any gaps with our remaining resources. This agility also allowed us to support newsrooms covering the election by launching the Knight Election Hub and hosting the Knight Election Law Forums with the American Bar Association. And when state support for Florida’s arts and cultural organizations was unexpectedly cut this summer, we responded with one-time, emergency funding for 96 small arts organizations in Knight communities across the state. As Knight looks forward to 2025, we’re committed to moving at the speed of news as we identify opportunities to multiply our impact. Today, I’m proud to announce $15.5 million in new Press Forward grants to help fund five new local chapters across the country. And as part of our work to support the expansion of Press Forward, we’re also now investing $1.2 million in our partners at Poynter Institute, who will work with other funders local to Press Forward communities on how to invest in journalism philanthropy to further support news organizations in immediate need of funding. With another disaster looming in Hurricane Milton, we need more trustworthy local news & information flowing through our communities. Misinformation hampers recovery, and local news is a strong antidote.
