  • 🎉 Exciting news! The National Endowment for the Humanities has awarded the ASLA Fund a $190,000 grant to host a K-12 Educator workshop on "Teaching Environmental Humanities through Landscape Architecture" in 2025! “The more people we invite into the profession of landscape architecture the stronger our communities will become,” said Torey Carter-Conneen, CAE, CEO of ASLA. “Landscape architecture is a unique blend of art and science. Workshops like this are how we provide a path for students who likely have no idea this could be a career path for them.” Interested educators can contact us at toolsforteachers@asla.org to learn more. • “2023 was the hottest year on record,” said Daniella Hirschfeld, ASLA, PhD, assistant professor at Utah State University. “But we must also think of a future when 2023 was one of the coolest years this century.” In the next few decades, we can expect 250,000 excess deaths from extreme heat worldwide each year. People in underserved communities, children, and older adults are at greater risk. There will also be significant economic impacts. “Already, an estimated 153 billion labor hours have been lost due to extreme heat.” In an online discussion organized by the ASLA Biodiversity and Climate Action Committee, Hirschfeld said there is one approach that can help cool entire communities. “Nature-based solutions reduce urban heat islands.” Read more in ASLA's THE DIRT: https://bit.ly/3yKrnZw Image Credit: Heat map of Omaha, Nebraska / Salvador Lindquist and Keenan Gibbons

  • Attending the ASLA 2024 Conference in Washington, D.C.? If so, learn why it's important to talk to product manufacturers about your biodiversity and climate action goals. A recent ASLA survey found that only 24 percent of landscape architects currently ask to see some form of an environmental product declaration (EPD) before specifying products. For the manufacturers not receiving requests for EPDs, it is hard to see the demand or return on investment in developing them. • “We know natural resources are finite,” said Amy Syverson-Shaffer, ASLA, sustainability leader at Landscape Forms, but “there is also an ‘efficiency resource’ — and we don’t know the limits of that yet.” Given the extent of the climate and biodiversity crises, there is a need to end business-as-usual. Landscape architects and product manufacturers can work together to pursue efficiencies, reduce the use of polluting materials, and transform design and construction. These approaches will help us all get on a path to zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040. A recent discussion organized by the ASLA Biodiversity and Climate Action Committee explored how companies that create products and services for landscape architects are planning for a different future. • “I think advocacy is seen as this daunting, ambiguous thing that feels disconnected when in reality, we do it every day – and we are good at it. In our region, where we have spent years breaking down misconceptions of what a landscape architect DOES, advocating is second nature – whether it’s championing our profession, amplifying overlooked voices, or elevating our communities. Let's talk about how to turn advocacy into action.” -- Megan Terry, ASLA, PLA, Landscape Architect, Water & Environmental Technologies The ASLA Biodiversity and Climate Action Committee has organized a new 9-part webinar series: Biodiversity and Climate Action 101 for Landscape Architects. Register for the seventh webinar -- Influencing Federal, State, and City Policies: Success Stories and New Opportunities -- on August 19 at 2 PM ET. Join Megan; Jessica Henson, ASLA, PLA, Partner, OLIN; and Michelle E. Garza, San Antonio River Authority. This webinar is free for ASLA members and $50 for non-members. It offers 1.0 PDH (LACES/HSW). The webinar series is underwritten by Landscape Forms. Register today: https://bit.ly/3X010Yx Image Credit: Resilient Butte, Montana and Megan Terry / Water & Environmental Technologies
