The Earth's Best Defense
About us
NRDC is the nation's most effective environmental action organization. We use law, science and the support of 1.3 million members and online activists to protect the planet's wildlife and wild places and to ensure a safe and healthy environment for all living things. Worth Magazine has named NRDC one of America's 100 best charities, and the Wise Giving Alliance of the Better Business Bureau reports that NRDC meets its highest standards for accountability and use of donor funds. NRDC was founded in 1970 by a group of law students and attorneys at the forefront of the environmental movement. NRDC lawyers helped write some of America's bedrock environmental laws. Today, our staff of more than 300 lawyers, scientists and policy experts -- a MacArthur "genius" award-winner among them -- work out of offices in New York, Washington, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Beijing. The New York Times calls us "One of the nation's most powerful environmental groups." The National Journal says we're "A credible and forceful advocate for stringent environmental protection." With the support of our members and online activists, NRDC works to solve the most pressing environmental issues we face today: curbing global warming, getting toxic chemicals out of the environment, moving America beyond oil, reviving our oceans, saving wildlife and wild places, and helping China go green.

Colleges have the opportunity to become more sustainable thanks to the Inflation Reduction Act, the biggest climate law in U.S. history. Now they can save tons of money all while showing prospective students their commitment to the environment. https://lnkd.in/e3mXUQdf

NRDC’s Director of Forest Policy Elly Pepper is calling out the biomass energy industry. Industrial-scale biomass energy comes from clearcutting forests and burning the wood pellets. This only worsens climate change and harms neighboring communities. As world leaders gather for this year’s UN Biodiversity Conference (COP16), they must end bioenergy subsidies. The UN Biodiversity Conference (COP16) brings together world leaders to address the biodiversity crisis as millions of wildlife species face the threat of extinction. This is a moment for the global community to lay out a concrete plan to reverse biodiversity loss and restore nature by 2050. Learn more from NRDC experts Yamide Dagnet and Andrew Wetzler.

The Supreme Court turned away coal companies and their allies' attempts to halt climate progress this month, but a wave of key rulings for the EPA and federal agencies are making it harder to safeguard our planet.

NRDC has been on the ground from Flint, Michigan to Newark, New Jersey fighting to remove toxic lead pipes and secure safe drinking water for communities. This past week was a huge milestone.
Earlier this week, safe water advocates from across the country celebrated a monumental win for public health when the EPA released the Lead and Copper Improvements Rule, which requires nearly every lead water pipe in the country to be removed within the next 10 years. NRDC has partnered with communities in Flint, Newark, and beyond to demand justice for the tens of millions of people who for too long have had lead in their drinking water, with disastrous impacts on their health and wellbeing. Thanks to the courage and tenacity of community activists; the dedication of so many in our movement; and the support of city, state and federal government partners; we’re one giant step closer to getting lead pipes out of the ground once and for all— and getting safe drinking water into every home in the United States. Because of NRDC's decades-long leadership on this issue, several members of our team were invited to join President Biden in Milwaukee for the official announcement. It was an honor to stand alongside many of the community leaders who our team has gotten to know very well over the years. This new rule is a testament to the power of persistence— and it’s proof that when we form strong coalitions, change is possible. I had the honor of traveling to Milwaukee with President Biden on Air Force One. We talked about how this work is fundamentally about people’s dignity and how the country can tackle this problem once and for all, if we choose to do so. I couldn’t be prouder of NRDC’s extraordinary team working to ensure that the basic human right to clean water is protected. [Official White House Photo by Adam Schultz]

We have been working towards this day since NRDC was invited by the local community groups in Flint to get the lead out. There is always more work to do but this is an enormous step forward.

Lead in our drinking water has been a public health crisis for decades. The tireless efforts of people across the country have pushed the future of drinking water in the right direction–paving a path toward safer water for all of our communities.
