📣 DEADLINE EXTENDED: The State of Nature Metrics consultation is now open until the 13 November! A lack of consensus on how to measure nature's recovery in a credible and practical way is hindering progress. We're inviting you to comment on a proposed set of State of Nature Metrics to drive nature-positive outcomes. Your input can strengthen the proposed metrics and build a broad consensus! Nature Positive Initiative
Non-profit Organizations
Nature is in crisis, placing human and planetary health at risk. Together we can secure a nature-positive world by 2030.
About us
We need more nature at the end of the decade, not less! ‘Nature positive’ is a global goal defined as ‘halt and reverse nature loss by 2030 on a 2020 baseline, and achieve full recovery by 2050’. Put simply, it means ensuring more nature in the world in 2030 than in 2020 and continued recovery after that. The Nature Positive Initiative (NPI) is a coalition of conservation organizations, standard-setting organizations, institutes, and business and finance coalitions which have come together to drive alignment around use of the term ‘nature positive’ and support broader, longer-term efforts to deliver nature-positive outcomes. Core work includes preserving the integrity of ‘nature positive’ as a measurable 2030 global goal for nature for business, government, and other stakeholders, and providing the tools and guidance necessary to allow all to contribute. The initiative also advocates for the full implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework by governments and other stakeholders. The NPI coordinates a diverse Nature Positive Forum, which is open for all relevant institutions and organizations to join and support and implement the Nature Positive global goal for nature.

As #COP16 in Colombia closes, Convener of the Nature Positive Initiative, Marco Lambertini, shares a closing statement: “In the midst of a global nature and climate crisis, CBD COP16 marked the moment to translate ambition to transition. Two years after the historic adoption of the Global Biodiversity Framework in Montreal we were expecting more ambitious action. Whilst we have welcomed announcements like the $60 million to protect Gabon’s forests and the $51.7 million for marine protected areas, it is clear significant shortfalls remain in funding nature’s recovery. We still see a finance gap of around $20 billion a year to support the 30 by 30 target, and at least $2.6 trillion of subsidies annually are harmful to nature. We are falling dangerously short of what's needed to deliver a nature-positive future. “Outside of the negotiation rooms and in the Nature Positive Pavilion we truly felt the power of collective action. Hundreds of NGOs, Indigenous representatives, businesses, governments, and civil society organizations united behind a clear mission to halt and reverse nature loss by 2030. Businesses have historically had a significant impact on nature, but at COP16 we have seen them understanding that they can be a key contributor to achieving a nature-positive future. “The Nature Positive Initiative, backed by 27 of the world's largest conservation organizations and almost 150 forum members, stands ready to accelerate implementation. Our consultation on standardized 'State of Nature Metrics' will carry on our work beyond the conference, providing a measurement framework to credibly report on progress towards nature-positive outcomes. “It’s time to embrace the transition to a nature-positive future, which will deliver resilient societies and economies, whilst respecting and preserving nature. We hope the presidency can find an effective time to conclude the deliberations, particularly on the most essential dimension of funding and financial flows.” https://lnkd.in/egxUhSCh

📢 What’s the state of play of the COP16 negotiations ahead of the final day? A panel of nature and conservation policy experts offered their analysis on sticking points and expectations in our press conference. Read their insights: ⬇️ “We need to shift from target setting to ambitious delivery. We need to deliver on the resources so we can create a nature-positive world to halt and reverse nature loss by 2030.” ~ Patricia Zurita, Chief Strategy Officer, Conservation International “The GBF is an ambitious ship. We are looking for governments to give the ship its sails, to ensure that we have the right conditions in place to halt the loss of biodiversity and put nature on a path to recovery by the end of this decade” ~ Martin Harper, CEO, BirdLife International “Biodiversity has got no borders. We all work together for the sake of our nature, and we look forward to making sure we live in harmony with nature. Making peace with nature is one of the key issues that will make us succeed” ~ Lucy Mulenkei, Executive Director of the Indigenous Information Network (IIN) “To halt and reverse the loss of nature in the ocean we need integrated action across the Global Biodiversity Framework to come to grips with issues like the impacts of fisheries, habitat loss, mobilisation of finance, reform of harmful subsidies and of course the pervasive impacts of climate change” ~ Pepe Clarke, Oceans Practice Leader, WWF “Outside of the formal negotiations we are seeing progress. Many different actors are starting to talk about their progress and gear up to the action that is needed. But finance is not being nearly enough discussed in the negotiations and there are massive financial gaps” ~ Gavin Edwards, Executive Director, Nature Positive Initiative 🎥Watch the recording: https://lnkd.in/eKXgfiXY #COP16Colombia #NaturePositive

Wildlife population sizes have plummeted by 73% on average in the last 50 years according to WWF’s Living Planet Report. We urge everyone at COP16 in Colombia to make peace with nature for a sustainable future for all life on Earth. 🐳🦬🐝 Without re-establishing this harmony, we risk crossing irreversible ecological tipping points. 🙏 🌎 It was an absolute pleasure to host UN Biodiversity Executive Secretary Astrid Schomaker at the Nature Positive Pavilion for our 'Explaining Nature Positive reception at COP16. "We need to start somewhere and the best way to start is always by bringing people together. That makes this Initiative so exciting, and the group of people that come together in this initiative, with their knowledge and experience, make me very hopeful that the NPI can make a difference" ~ said Astrid at the event. Marco Lambertini welcomed four more fantastic speakers (and writers!) to the stage to bring insight from some of these sectors and talk about the story of nature positive so far - Harvey Lock, Dorothy Maseke, Eva Zabey and Carlos Manuel Rodriguez. 📽 Watch Astrid's speech and hear the unique perspectives from our speakers here: https://lnkd.in/eEkGHzTF

We had a full-house for our events exploring State of Nature Metrics in the Nature Positive Pavilion at the UN CBD's COP16. A clear sign that people have woken up to the imperative of measuring progress towards a nature-positive future! 🪲🐬 Currently, there is no common approach to measure nature’s decline or recovery. That's why we are building consensus on a set of State of Nature Metrics to drive nature-positive outcomes in line with the overarching mission set in the Global Biodiversity Framework - to halt and reverse nature loss. It was great to hear feedback on the metrics from event participants. Now, we need your input! Have your say on the proposed state of nature metrics and join the consultation today: 🗣️https://lnkd.in/eycKGxAw 📌If you missed these events, then join our next full-day of State of Nature metrics event next Tuesday 29 October. 👏🌺🦎 The opening reception at the Nature Positive Pavilion was an inspiring way to start a week of interesting and engaging events. Many pavilion partners took to the stage, highlighting the widespread backing of the Nature Positive Global Goal. All shared their passion for the united call for accelerated implementation of the Global Biodiversity Framework to secure a nature-positive world by 2030 and halt and reverse nature loss. COP16 is being held in Colombia, one of the world’s richest countries in biodiversity. Sandra Valenzuela de Narvaez, WWF Colombia celebrated Colombia’s role in global coordination efforts to protect and restore nature and we were overjoyed to have support from WWF Ambassador, Claudia Bahamon. 📌 The full and varied schedule of the Nature Positive Pavilion at COP16 gives a flavour of the many aspects to biodiversity and the diversity of approaches to tackling the nature crisis.
