At the recent SDinGov conference in Edinburgh, Scotland—which brought together practitioners working on #ServiceDesign in the public sector—Nava Labs co-leads Martelle Esposito, MS, MPH and Genevieve Gaudet shared our work with a global audience in their session titled “From prototypes to policy: Advocating for public benefits innovation and responsible AI.” They shared tips on how to incorporate an advocacy approach into service design and digital technology projects, learned from Nava Labs’ work on two projects: improving access to #WIC nutrition benefits through modernization efforts (https://lnkd.in/eqCrJCvS) and supporting caseworkers in quickly enrolling people in government benefits programs with responsible applications of #AI (https://lnkd.in/epQWimjF). This interactive session equipped participants to contribute meaningfully to strengthening the loop between policy, programmatic mission, and implementation. As the philanthropically-funded Nava Labs team continues its work on prototyping policy and systems changes, we’ll continue to share lessons learned—in pursuit of improving the design and delivery of public services for all.

About us
Nava is a consultancy and public benefit corporation working to make government services simple, effective, and accessible to all. Nava emerged from the effort to rebuild HealthCare.gov after its troubled launch, and exists to address some of the most complex challenges in the public sector. We’re thinkers and designers of civic technology. We work holistically across engineering, research, design, and operations to proactively envision the services of a better future. We build with empathy and inclusion, and as we come from many backgrounds and countries ourselves, we seek and value different perspectives.

There are many benefits to #cloud adoption—but when migrating to the cloud, it’s important to try not to disturb existing IT operations or to deprecate legacy systems while simultaneously trying to rebuild and replace them. Nava’s CEO Rohan Bhobe and Aquia’s CEO Chris H. sat down to discuss proven strategies that can facilitate and accelerate cloud adoption, drawn from experience. Check out our video below with highlights from our conversation! Aquia and Nava recently won a joint-venture award under the USDA’s Digital Infrastructure Services Center STRATUS Basic Ordering Agreement. We’ll leverage our combined expertise to deliver better human-centered digital services and outcomes that foment trust in public institutions.

We’re excited to announce that we won a prime award to help the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) with its Customer Experience (#CX) modernization effort. Through this digital services project, we’ll leverage human-centered design to help OPM cultivate reliable, intuitive digital service experiences for millions of federal employees in areas like like managing healthcare and retirement benefits. This opportunity will enable us to continue and build upon our existing partnership with OPM. For over a year, we’ve been providing IT services to support OPM’s work of providing over 8 million current and former federal employees with insurance and benefit programs, including healthcare enrollment information. It’s finally here. Nava’s 2024 Public Benefit Report, “Improving every level of service delivery”, has been officially published! This year’s report highlights how we take a holistic approach to building positive government services, programs, and ecosystems. This year, we did everything from helping CMS connect Medicare beneficiaries to “Birthing-Friendly” hospitals, to partnering with CDC on strengthening pandemic response readiness, to conducting research on AI-powered tools that expand access to public benefits. Through it all, we remained laser focused on our mission of delivering simple, effective, and accessible government services.
