My press interview with Los Angeles Times's Nabih Bulos: Israel’s strikes on Yemen destroyed storage tanks with more than 150,000 tons of fuel, along with a number of cranes and piers, said Mohammed Al-Basha, a senior Yemen expert at the U.S.-based Navanti Group consulting firm. The expectation is that the Houthis, as well as their allies in other Iran-backed factions, will intensify their attacks both on Israel and in the Red Sea, utilizing more advanced Iranian-supplied weaponry than the group has possessed in the past, Albasha said. "Historically, Iran didn't give the Houthis the newest technology. Now they are," he said. He pointed out that the drone used in the Tel Aviv attack, which the Houthis called Yafa (the Arabic name for Jaffa), was a modified version of the Houthi-manufactured Sammad 3 drone — but with a newer engine and possibly upgraded avionics.

My press statements to AFP on the Israel Defense Forces-Israeli Air Force airstrikes in #Yemen: Hodeida port, a critical entry point for imports and international aid for Huthi-held parts of Yemen, had remained largely untouched through the decade-long war between the rebels and the internationally recognised government propped up by neighbouring Saudi Arabia. "Traders now fear that this will exacerbate the already critical food security and humanitarian situation in northern Yemen, as the majority of trade flows through this port," said Mohammed Al-Basha, senior Middle East analyst for the US-based Navanti Group. He said the Israeli strikes "would likely be perceived by many Yemenis as an attack on their homeland, which could bolster Huthi recruitment and funding." Read more: https://lnkd.in/eDBFHxmP

My press comments published by Vivian Nereim at The New York Times: Mohammed Al-Basha, a senior Middle East expert at Navanti Group, a research organization, said that the damage from the airstrikes would likely lead to severe fuel shortages throughout northern Yemen, “impacting essential services such as diesel generators for hospitals.” “The damage to the Hodeidah power station, combined with the intense summer heat, will further exacerbate the suffering of the local population,” Mr. Albasha added. My press comments published by The Wall Street Journal’s Stephen Kalin: The attack exemplifies how the Houthis’ arsenal has evolved since its war against Saudi Arabia and its allies began in 2015, from basic reconnaissance to advanced combat drones, said Mohammed Al-Basha senior Yemen analyst at the Virginia-based research firm Navanti Group. “This progression from unarmed UAVs to long-range, explosive-laden and now potentially stealth drones marks a significant shift in the region’s aerial warfare dynamics,” he said. My press comments to Lara Jakes from The New York Times on the #Houthi #TelAviv drone strike: Either way, “this was bound to happen,” said Mohammed Al-Basha, the Middle East analyst for the Navanti Group ... “The Houthis have been trying since November to have a big hit inside Israel.” Mr. al-Basha said it could have been just “a lucky strike” by the Houthis, but added: “I have learned over the past decade not to underestimate what they claim.” Read more: https://lnkd.in/eKrjJYeJ

#Yemen Update on the #Houthi attack on #TelAviv: The #Houthis' alleged use of the new #Yafa stealth drone against Tel Aviv highlights their rapidly evolving #UAV capabilities. Since the outbreak of the 2015 civil war, their drone arsenal has progressed from basic reconnaissance models to advanced combat drones. The Yafa radar-evading drone may incorporate Radar-Absorbent Materials #RAM and new designs aimed at lowering its radar cross-section #RCS. These advancements in stealth technology are likely influenced by the ongoing joint #Russian-#Iranian military technology partnership in the war in #Ukraine. Russia has modified Iranian Shahed-136 drones by applying darker paint with carbon materials to enhance radar absorption and improve stealth. This may explain the dark paint seen on the #Yafa drone, which was initially thought to be part of the long-range #Samad series. These modifications demonstrate that stealth technology encompasses not only specialized coatings but also design principles aimed at manipulating radio waves and minimizing radar signatures. Iran's own stealth drone advancements, exemplified by the Shahed 171, can be traced back to the reverse engineering of a U.S. RQ-170 Sentinel captured in 2011. This technological transfer has likely influenced the development of Houthi drone capabilities.
